Any comments on the "how to'?

Always willing to make changes and improve it :)

having bought my car pre-modded and not having much knowledge of the engines, i decided to pop my head in and see what turbo im running. AGU engine and turns out after a sneaky phone camera pic im running a standard K03. i will be doing my exhaust first, fixing some other little niggles then i wil be making the upgrade to K03S. i must say this guide is top notch bud! and if you fancy getting ur hands dirty on another one (as you said a couple of years ago ;) ) then be my guest.....but i will deffo be waiting for better weather me thinks...

once again hats off to you mate, cracking guide!

I'm swapping a K03 for a K03s tomorrow, but have a few questions to ask.

Firstly, can I get away with leaving the oil & coolant feed and return lines attached to the block ?

This swap will be in a Mk2 Golf, so there is quite a bit more room to work in compared to the MK4.

I've swapped many k03 and k03s turbos in the past, but the engine has always been out of the car.

If you could let me know that would be great. That way I can make sure we have fresh oil and coolant to replace if the lines have to be removed.

Rich.

easier to remove turbo with coolant lines attached. Oil feed can be left, same with oil return
Thanks for the reply Chris.

I've just been round to my lock up to look at my own MK2 running a K03s, and your right, the coolant lines and the oil feed banjos are hidden by the exhaust manifold, which I don't want to remove really.

Was hoping I could get away with leaving the lines but its clearly not the case :-(

thanks noo noo for the great write up - very thorough and really useful.

(mine came out the top without removing the exhaust manifold after removing the actuator)

The oil feed line on the turbo end is a real PITA to get off though with the manifold in place. Ended up having to drop the exhaust anyway to get enough room to get at the coolant and oil feed lines.

Just waiting for a couple of parts before it all goes back together.

Anybody know the best way to replace the oil feed line- I've got a new OEM one, but a bit reluctant to strip off too much more to fit it - might just leave the old one in place and give it a good clean?

Thanks again for your write up - spot on

Yeah, sometimes it can be easier to remove more and have less frustration! I know I can't stand head scratching and grazed knuckles...
Nice to know it can come out topside with the actuator removed. Shame the downpipe needed moving as that would really save time.

For the average Joe mechanic I still believe dropping the downpipe and removing the manifold is easiest, although time consuming.

They are simple hex bolts, 10mm I think... certainly 12mm or less.

hi, I know this is an old thread but wondering if anyone can help, im just trying to replace by blown turbo.

1. why do you disconnect the hoses on the block or at the front of the engine, to then disconnect them at the turbo too, are you removing the hoses? oil feed at the filter etc.. could I simply leave these in place, and just remove them at the turbo?

2. I have been told by several people I don't need to drain the oil/water. is the only reason you remove the coolant return from the block to do this? and will all the oil pour out of the oil return if I have not drained it before hand?
