I remember our phone number only having 4 when I was a kid, then later they added an 81 to the front of it

used to be 0706 ****

and now it's 01706 81****

 

Whatever year it was, pretty sure it ended with 'BC'

Short dialling went when the exchanges converted to System-X. Roughly between 88 and 95.. the rural ones being the latest.

 

how many of you are still on 5 digit number like me

so many times when giving my number out for contact info has the
person at the other end said i'm missing a digit hahaha!

 

LOL - in Northwich they have one less digit on the phone number to make up for the extra digits you have on your hands!

Having a clear out and found something with a four digit phone number on it,just wondered how long ago we had four digit phone numbers[8-|]

Sorry, I meant the ability to dial just 4 digits within the same exchange area, they were always 5/6 digits in reality.

My village was small enough to all share one exchange code, so although our numbers were 6 digits of 75 XXXX, everyone used to advertise businesses as Lymm XXXX and you could short dial internally till the early 90's.

I assumed Patch found something of a similar business ad??

The shortest phone number in the country used to be the airport at Barra in the inner Hebrides where they land on the beach at low tide,the terminal building used to be a shed about the size a council lockup garage with the phone number Northbay 1.

i was in whitworth/rochdale when they changed from 4 digits they put 85 infront of all the local numbers, from 3193 to 853193 that was about 20 years ago.

 

The 1 was added to area codes in the 90's. 4 digit numbers got changed to 6 in the early 80's. Not sure which year. I am currently searching the web to date a photo with a 4 digit number, hence me being here now.
