No bass boost, head unit on about 3/4 maximum volume, turn gain up till it just starts to distort then back off a touch.

It can also improve the power handling even if you don't have a sub by switching in the HPF (High Pass Filter). You'll gain power handling and lose distortion at the expense of deep bass.Start with it at it's fully anti-clockwise setting and slowly turn it up to a point where you still have some bass but you've lost most of the cone bending excursion, trial and error shuld give you a good compromise between the two.

I tried the gain turned all the way down but also noticed there is a switch beside the gain adjust for different voltage settings 2-8v seemed to set the gain lower.

Also the head unit has bass boost and high pass filters should I set everything to zero on the amp and adjust everything through the head unit.

Bass boost always off on anything other than subs we know can handle it,if the headunit is adjustable continuously and not in steps then do it from there,if it does do it in steps then do it from the amp. Both will give the same results, but you'll be able to fine tune it from the amp a bit better.
