Retro Fitting Cruise Control to a mk4 Golf.

Hey all,

It's nice to see the site finally being up and running again after it's been down for so long.

My query is this, I've been seeing recently a lot of DIY guides posted to various sites showing how to install or retrofit cruise control to the Mk4's that didn't come with them when they left the factory, and it got me thinking, can it be fitted to a 1.6 16v Mk4 Golf?

I do a lot of motorway driving and do find at times when driving other cars how nice it is to have and use cruise control, and as such got me thinking about seeing if it would be possible to fit it to my 1.6.

I've seen that kits for them are still available on eBay and have seen that "AwesomeGTI" does still have the service available for £199.99 but not mention if it's for any specific model, so, have retrofitted cruise control themselves or got a garage to do it, and if so how much would I expect to pay and would it be theoretically possible to have it done to a 1.6 16v?

Please do let me know,
Thanks.
Duck.

Note:
I would love to get it fitted by AwesomeGTI, but unfortunately don't live in that part of the country and would be a trek in itself to go up there to have it done.

Cruise control in the mk4 period was mostly option, I have a 4motion and that didnt have factory cruise.I found with the 'highline' models such as GTi and 4motion its easier to fit Cruise as there is already wiring from the ECU to the bulkhead connector, meaning for the most part its just a new bit of loom the dash side. Equally some of the posher models came pre wired up to the bulkhead connector too, it was mainly a time saving exercise from VW as certain models people were more likely to add the option. These days its much more model based as to if cruise was standard, eg if you buy a mk6/mk7 match golf cruise is standard and its only the 'S' models that dont have it.

Thanks for the inside on that, I was always thinking (Similar to Fords) that cruise control was for only the higher or "posher" versions, it's nice to know that the main lot of the wiring is present, so in theory one of the kits that feature the stalk and the wiring to go from the stalk to the ECU is all that's required, excluding the activation from VCDS, since mines only a 2004 1.6 16v Match I guess the wiring isn't there so the would have to get one of these kits and then get someone/a garage to fit it and active it via VCDS.

I get the feeling if its a 1.6 16v its likely to have the cables from the ECU to the bulk head connector, but nothing on the cabin side.

I did write an 'instructable' when I was doing my mk4 golf 4motion cruise, but I was also fitting the multifunction steering wheel at the same time, there might be something useful in there for you:

mk4 golf MFSW + cruise instructable

I wasnt sure at the time of writing whether the 1.6 16v all had the additional wiring, but I got the impression they did, it was more things like S and SE that would be unlikely to have the wiring.

Thanks for your link to your instruction guide, and further information, I'll be sure to have a read.
One quick thing, I've got a FIS cluster fitted to mine that I had done a while ago to replace the more common half FIS clocks, when the cruise control is on did it ever have a function to show digitally what it's set to or the current speed for the highline clocks? Was curious to know as would think that would be a useful feature

Mk4 cruise isnt like the newer cars, infact its a bit weird. It has a green light on the dash that shows cruise is active, but thats it. The stalk only has set/reset, on/off, there is no cancel. My MFSW has a cancel button which I can see in VCDS works, but my after market loom doesnt have. I have factory half FIS and nothing comes up for speed.

Okay thanks for that, please do correct me if I'm wrong as I'm just reading through your guide now, but is there two types of Cruse control for the Mk4 platform? One that uses the MFSW as you've mentioned in in your guide, and secondary cruise control that has the On/Off control, set (speed) and reset button(s) on the indicator stalk.

I've seen kits available on eBay but when the time comes don't want to get the wrong one and then find for example I need to get the steering wheel on top, the one I was thinking of going with is just the one that has all the functions that are on the indicator stalk.

Thanks for your help Bugsy

Technically there are 2 types of stalk, the one that goes with the MFSW from the factory and the regular one, you can actually use the regular one with the MFSW, but you cant use the MFSW one without the wheel :)

I listed the part number of what you need to look for, its the same for diesel and petrol models I am pretty sure, essentially its like 5 wire connection, power, ground, on, set, reset, I included a wiring diagram you can download on that instruction thing, I'd be interested to see how you find it as it'll be the first time someone separate to my household has looked at it and used it, then I can change anything that doesnt make sense. I figured I'd make an instructable so the pictures and diagrams hold, its one of the biggest pains when people use photobucket and other photo hosting sites and the files get deleted, instructables it wont :)

Thanks for that I was looking at this one with the "Reset" and "Set" buttons on the side of the stalk which correct me if I'm wrong is the one to go for if you don't have the MFSW
Link: VW Golf 4 TDI Bora Cruise Control Retrofit Kit GRA v6 r32 Cruise Speed Control kit mk4 | eBay

Would you mind letting me know if that is the correct one that I was thinking of, to use if I don't wish to go with the MFSW

I did find a Chinese equalized for a little less but looked exactly the same but couldn't confirm on the estimated shipping times

FWIW the one on my car (2004 1.6 16v SE), is an on/off switch on the indicator stalk, and set, reset and cancel on the MFSW.

I think you also need ESP or ASR as standard too if you want to retrofit cruise, could be wrong though. ESP model cars have different brake MCs than non-ESP cars.

If you get an issue where cruise doesn't work when you've wired it up and coded, then you might have a dead clutch pedal switch, so check the functionality of that when it comes to fitting.
Thanks for your input ttg4l, I do believe if memory serves my 1.6 16v "MATCH" special edt has the "ESP" button on the dash to the left of the hazard light switch that I changed the switch for many years ago to the "FUNK" button 😁.

Just a heads up, I ordered cruise on my 1998 GTi AGU.
It's non DBW (cable throttle) no ASR, just EBD.
Stalk has on, off, resume, + and -. 1mph steps on the +- buttons. No indication on the small non FIS LCD display or in the dials. No MF steering wheel (don't remember it being an option in 1997).

Many have said my cars cruise does not exist! I guess I have a more advanced throttle body than typical cable cars of the time.
Was £295 IIRC.

If its a cable throttle from 1997, pretty sure you'll need a vacuum control module, unless you just added the stalk and it worked? I have a 1998 T4 VR6 thats cable throttle and while it has an electronic bit on the throttle for raising the idle, it wont hold cruise throttle, thats all done by a vacuum actuator on the throttle, a vacuum pump, a cruise relay module, vacuum cut off for clutch and brake pedal and some vac line....

Be interested to see what results you have had, because as I have been looking at cruise after doing my mk4, the T4 vans arent a million miles away from the same setup of electrical stuff.

No vacuum system or pump on the car (all the inlet mani stuff is capped off). So it's just the throttle body.... I can only think the TB is capable of all positions, not just a small amount of movement for idle.
As normal, clutch or brake disengage.
Remember this is factory installed.

:)

Doing my cambelt tomorrow, will get you the PN of my TB.

It should be 06A133063F as mentioned in my link.
