i didn't measure it buddy if im honest, I get a free supply of engine oil so I just pour out what I need from 20l containers.

I'll drop the oil tonight/tomorrow and measure what comes out and what I replace it with

you are correct the dipstick tube is knackered .... but I was very careful (so i thought) with checking the levels using my other 1.8t as reference

I have new tube on order also should be here when I get home if the royal snail is working well

Evening All,

Today the post man was very kind and brought me a new dipstick so after refitting the gearbox to my other golf i set about fitting of the new dipstick, once fitted i checked the levels and i was right on the max mark. So as someone mentioned earlier i threw some more oil at it. now reads about 2 mm above full.

Took her out for another run.

I was out 30 mins in total.

Cold Idle was 68 PSI

Warm ish Idle 18 PSI

Warm Idle 14 PSI

When i was parking the car BEEP... low oil pressure .. 11 PSI idle now..

Car stays at 11 PSI and keeps saying low oil pressure warning.

Too low.

Engine worn. Consider replacing the pump first. Or jam some 10w60 in.
Yeah that was kinda what i thought you were going to say.. seeing as though you have built a few engines do you have any preference over pump makes? OEM or just an after market pump? i'll try and order one this week.

Ive removed the AC from the car, I noticed also that it dropped 1-2 PSI when I pressed the clutch in.

Ive never paid so much attention to oil pressure before

So tonight I fitted my new oil pump..

It seems to have better idle pressure so far.. however it did last time after an oil change too. ..

I think now i just need to sort my idle hunt out as that's the only thing bringing the revs and pressures down momentarily.

Old pick up pipe was clean..

The pic with 13psi was on idle with main beams.. heaters.. and wipers on flat out..

Test drive a little further tomorrow to see if this has helped

It had done 196000 miles and was about to be giving a good hiding on track so I thought why not.....

I have slightly further developments though..

Thought I would test drive it this morning and bring it to work about 16 miles ..

3/4 the way in ***** beep *****

This time consistently it came on for 5 seconds flashing when I was in a 30 zone in 3/4 gear at 1500 rpm reading between 25 and 30 psi..

So the oil pressures at this rpm is spot on but it's still beeping low oil pressure ... frustrating .. and this is the second oil pressure switch (wasn't brand new but off my 180 gti)

sorry Adam what are you referring to by loom ?

im more thinking its the cars sensors playing up more than an issue as the light flashes up then goes back off as if it realizes all is good in the world after a few seconds
