Nasty Grinding noise on wheelspin

Driving in a blizzard this morning I noticed that every time I wheelspun (quite a lot this morning!) there was a horrific grinding noise, I don't know how best to describe it, I guess it's like one of those old-school football rattles!

Is something on the way out? Drives fine normally

It's not the ABS, it's different to the juddering you get from that, and it's when accelerating, not breaking. I'm not sure I've even got traction control, there's no button or anything labled for it anyway.

I'll assume it's nothing to be scared of then!

I've had this for age's too. I ain't got TC and can't see it being ABS when i'm not breaking. Also it does it in the wet aswell not just the snow!

Would like to know what it is though!
My mates does it, and again he does not have traction control! It is only people without traction control that get it.

Happens in wet or snow. never ever noticed it on dry.

I have read that it could be dual mass flywheel on way out.

Never noticed it on mine that i am aware of... maybe my radio is too loud lol!

i've not got traction control, and mine does it in the wet (or dry [:)]) usually when turning slightly, so i think it's when one wheel is slipping and not the other, or one wheel is being restricted from rotating at the same rate as the other.

its definately not the sound of the tyres, and i've had it before (as far as i can remember) my clutch/flywheel change and after

i've just got a bora at the weekend and when the wheels spin in the snow it makes this grinding/ clicking noise which sounds strange, not like traction control on my old mk4 20vt, or the power cut tc style on my old ibiza 20vt. i had another bora 2.0v last year same spec as this one but it never made that noise.

i also noticed with this one, i turned into an icy road and it was understeering like mad so i counteracted with a tug of the handbrake and a simular noise came from the rear end - sort of high speed clicking. i guess it's all some form of traction control or the abs sensors not liking whats going on.

i used to be a gearbox mechanic by trade so will endevour to find out what it is and will let you know, it does sound nasty though!

Mine does the same, well makes the same noise more so on mud an snow where grip is minimal it sounds like somthing is wrong but its just the tration control sorting its self out an trying to stop the wheel(s) spinning.

Hope this is of any help?

i wasn't aware i had any (real) traction control if i do it doesn't work and there's no light on the dash. my cupra used to flash like mad when it was struggling for grip then cut the power to retain grip. the bora will spin and click all day long so it's not really controlling traction. []

Best way to describe the noise for me is like when the tyre rub's on the arch lining or similar to when it used to rub on the ARB (metal on metal sound). As far as i can make out it is on the driver's side quite loud aswell not like something you hear in the background!

Only remember hearing it when going up hill though that just maybe because your more likely to spin uphill?!

Mine does this as well. Always has done. It alarmed me the first time that it did it but I am used it now. It has never got any worse or better over time so it's just one of those things I guess [:S]

I would like to know what it is though.

AFAIK. Its the ASR.. basically at first it cuts the power to stop wheel spin under harsh acceleration (usually does this in the wet when starting to spin) with snow and ice even with reduced power the wheels still spin. Once the power reduction doesnt stop the wheel spin the ABS kicks in on the wheel that is spinning to try to stop it spinning and provide some drive to the opposite wheel. I noticed this more with one wheel in the snow and one wheel on the road. Don't panic.. it is very strange when first encountered. This works differently to some of the other traction control systems that use a limited slip differential that transfers drive between the wheels when one starts to spin more than the other. Usually this is associated with the flashing amber warning light in the dash. If you dont have ASR or ESP then no idea what it is, but sounds alot like what you described. Guy at work set off in the snow got all kinds of noises like this and immediately turned around and went home. Came in the day after worried his clutch/gearbox was dieing. Explained what it was and then he noticed it only on ice on the way home. There isnt anything wrong.

AFAIK AGU's never came wit the option for traction control?

I know mine defiantly doesn't have it so it can't be anything to do with that. Also i would be interested to know hoe the ABS can stop wheel spin happening when it controls the brakes locking up?

Obviously this is a common phenomenon so an answer to it, good or bad, would benefit a lot of people and maybe even put some mind's at rest!

Cheers, Sam
