Golf mk4 wiring problems. ABS and ESP intermittent lights

only had the car a couple of months, and when i got it the ESP light was on solid.

was told by vw that this was because it was lowered 50mm on rock hard suspension, the "lateral accelleration sensor"in the steering colum would have been shook to death.

i then changed my suspension to 35mm drop coilovers(trying to improve the ride) but these were no good so i sent them back. whilst i had these fitted the ABS light was very intermittent, and i found turning the ign on and off fixed this. once however it fixed the esp(for about 1 min) then the light came back on solid(ESP)

when i fitted stock suspension, the ABS light went out straight away, and the ESP light was not coming on much. so i thought i had cured the problem...........but it is back on again now and has been for 2 weeks. the ABS light only came on a week ago, once, and went out the next time i started my car.

so i decided to get the sensor fitted(150 plus vat!) but this didn't fix it either, so the dealer didn't charge me, but suggested i get the wiring checked out. and if it's not the wiring they said it would be the abs control unit.

any ideas?

last resort- how do i get that f****ing orange light off my dashboard(i.e wheres the fuse, or how can i get the bulb out)

thanks.

Couple of things:

The "lateral sensor" can be reset by following a certain sequence of events - which the dealer should have done first. It basically involves driving around in a figure 8 at a certain speed while in adaption mode.

This then tells it what the normal position of the car is - even if you have lowered suspension - once the car knows that is the normal height it should clear any faults.

Did they pull off any fault codes when they had the car?

When I lowered my car one of the wheel sensor harness wires rubbed through on the tyre - this threw a recorded code straight away in VAGCOM when the wires earthed out on the wheel rim - it also lit up the ESP light and then the ABS light about 10 minutes later when it happened. If one part of the system is faulty it switches off automatically.

Check for "speed sensor intermittant signal" type faults with VAGCOM and check the harnesses behind the wheels for damage - now that you have gone back to stock height maybe the wires are bent back and contacting again or something like that.

Firstly I would ask the dealer who worked on your car whether he checked the above items - ask him some probing questions!.

VAGCOM is a diagnostic tool run off a laptop which mimics the dealers fancy computer. Available from here:

http://www.ross-tech.com/index.html

ESP calibration is done like this:

http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/steeringangle.html

Also do a search for 'Adjustment of Lateral Acceleration Sensor (G200)" which is the bit they replaced I believe.

This is what rubbed on my car:

Well, took mine to Louth VW this morning and have had a chat with the guys there......

The bloke from the service centre (matt?) said that it's the "lateral sensor" - and explained that they'd done the tests above.....

It's going to cost me ?170+ to get it sorted as it it keeps cutting the ABS and the ESP everytime it switches off! [:'(]

There goes my overtime this month!! At least it'll be sorted though!!

did you get it fixed then?my dealer said the same thing and when i picked it up they said

"oh, it wasn't that you must have a wiring fault"

and i have not had time to take it back since.

170
is cheap. my dealer was going to charge 150 for the part plus vat and
1. hours labour at 55 quid an hour. 270 in total!

She's in at the moment.......

When i took it yesterday they explained that they didn't have the sensor in stock - so are doing it now as i speak - should have it back by 4pm. Weird thing is that when i drove in yesterday there was no warning light at all - hasn't been now for two days - but the mechanic said that mine handn't packed up completely - it was on it's way out - so would work sometimes and wouldn't other times.

I'll let you know how i get on.

?150 for the sensor?!!!! They said it would be ?80+VAT and two hours labour for it - and i reckoned that was expensive!!!

You had a second opinion from a specialist like Awsome, or PSI tuning?

right then............... just got the old girl back - no light on the dash - no problems whatsoever...... so all's good.

I had a look at the receipt of what they replaced - and according to that they replaced the acceleration sensor - took them 2 hours to do it so that grand total came to ?198.....

I'll keep an eye on it - but it's all good right now

does the g200 accelleration sensor need to be calibrated? or is the calibration only for the steering angle sensor g85?

also, i have noticed that the wire had been rubbing on the rim, but it had been patched up. i took it apart to inspect and the wires were very tarnished(not shiny) and very brittle. i couldn't solder them as it wouldn't stick so i crimped them up. didn't make a difference.

i know that the brake pad wear wires work, because i unplugged that one and it said "CHECK BRAKES" on th dash.

JUST HAD A THOUGHT-is it possible that the esp computer reads certain levels of resistance/data from this, and the reason it is not working is cos the cable is corroded/tarnished/brittle(ie resistance is increased) and the break pad sensor one is still ok cos that is just a simple on/off circuit?

maybe this is the wiring prob vw spoke of? i think i might replace it......anybody know where it plugs in to the other side of the wheel arch?

The replacement piece of harness from VW for the under guard piece is actually the entire harness back to the ESP module up behind the air cleaner!

There is no join /plug after it goes into the inner guard. The harness is just two wires inside that rubber sheath, but you get about two metres of wire past the guard grommet. The ESP module end of the harness does not have any connectors on it, just bare wire, so you must be able to splice a repair connector onto the end with no ill effect.

after a diagnostics scan vw say now it is the G85 Steering angle sensor(a different VW garage)

and the ABS prob has now been fixed i did a proper job on the wire and it has not been on since.

also i have the airbag light on my dash and apparently this is cos the G85 is out of calibration and it's interlinked or sommet??? it's booked in to get fixed on Tuesday so hopefully my dash will be light free!!

307 quid for a steering angle sensor inc fitting, thats a bit steep innit?

Ive recently had a similar problem

lowered the car on coilovers, then a few weeks later the abs light came on (solid yellow light)

I ended up taking the wheel off and found the ABS Wire in half

i think when i loweres it the wire had a kink in it then because of the cold weather, eventually snapped, which brought the light on.

so just have a check round at all the wires and cables, you might find something :)
