Golf 2.0 GT TDI 170 2007 - what do I need to lookout for?

Hi guys - back again, havent been on here since i had my V5! (still miss her)

Just been made redundant - so am losing my company 2.0GT 140 in 5 weeks...

I'm a bit out of touch of what to look out for on golfs these days - so any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've spotted a 2.0 GT170 '07 for around 7k. Its on about 60k..what should I check that its had done to it? What are the issues / problems that I might face with it?

So far:

Check that the cambelt has been done (Service history) - 70k / 5 years. (If not - get it done and the water pump at the same time)

What is a 26E6 service?

Are there issues regarding the injectors and oil pump that I need to look into also?

Finally - 60k car - 2 previous owners - should alarm bells be ringing.

Steve... golfless... :0/

Why would that set alarm bells ringing?

By and large the
170 engines are very good. There is the injector recall but most of them
have already been sorted, those that have not it's a 5 minute phone
call to VW with the VIN number and a free repair is carried out. Vehicles do not have to have had a full VW service history as there was an official recall I do believe, just that owners had to contact VW, rather than them mass-mailing people..

The 170s do not suffer from porous heads and neither do they have weak turbos that can plague the 140s.

Unsure about the 170s oil pump, haven't heard of anything really.. but just like the PD150 cam shaft problem, a small minority of people have the problem and everyone runs around screaming about it like it effects every car!

Like with any purchase use your common when buying.. if it seems OK it probably is. Likewise if it doesn't then it probably isn't. :)

Bit of a fopa answering my own thread... but this guy seems to have it nailed down.

Hmmm...maybe a bit too risky.

Be VERY careful/weary about buying a Mk5 GT TDI.

Whilst no doubt there are many happy owners out there, there are some
real problems with the 2.0TDI engine, especially the 170ps version.

- the 2.0TDI 170ps pumpe duse engines were all fitted with what are
known as Siemens Piezo injectors. These are all failing at an alarming
rate and although VW are replacing them in many cases, there's no
official recall and they insist the car has FULL VW service history.
When one injector fails (they short circuit due to cr*p design) the
whole engine shuts down, irrespective of speed...

- the 2.0TDI's are also suffering from fracturing cylinder heads, which was only seemingly sorted from 07 onwards

- the 2.0TDI's are also suffering from oil pump faliure (the balancer
shaft collapses due to bad design) - this only effects some engine
codes

So be warned!"
