Its dead easy, all you need to do is get a flat head screwdriver underneath the plastic where it meets the gaitor and prise it apart, working your way around. It should pop off and seperate the two parts.

I wouldnt worry about the one missing clip as theyre just there to support the metal ring which goes round the gear knob to hold it tight against the gearstick. As long as you can get something round them you should be ok

too tight for some reason..

Any help would be FANTASTIC..

So you've got separate parts? The knob, gaitor and the the black plastic thing at the top of your first pic.

Been a while since I changed mine, but I'm sure it just pushed back together, maybe the gaitor is getting in the way of it clipping back into place?

Another thanks from me.

Replaced the original gaitor in my 2002 GTI MK4 today. I was initially worried since my replacement was slightly elasticated (ÂŁ6 for leather from ebay) and the original was stapled on with the chrome clipped on.

It was reasonably easy to get the retaining brass clip off (thanks to the comments here) but it took a pair of pliers and two screwdrivers to get the black ring off (along with some more skin off my knuckles!). Once I got the flipping black ring off it was fairly simple to cut back the original worn one and put the new elasticated one over the black ring and then clip the chrome over it sandwiching it in place.

On mine the chrome ring had perished and snapped at some point but I still managed to get in in place (almost like a snap ring) and pulled up the gaitor higher to cover the perished plastic. Once I got the black ring back on (which was a right royal pain) it all went back in nicely (using a hose clip to replace the original attachment).

Looks and feels much nicer to drive now.

Cheers Again!
