Hi can anyone please help me!
I have a 1999 S reg mk4 golf gt tdi 110, and the immobiliser wont switch off! the light just flashes! I had this problem before about a month ago so i just turned the ignition on and after about 20 mins it reset and was fine but this time it just keeps flashing and won't reset, im not sure if its the keys that have lost the codes or if the imobiliser in knackered, if it is broken are they expensive to replace? are they connected to the ECU so would i have to get a new ECU aswell? can anyone shed any light on if its an expensive job? or if its a common fault easily fixed.

thanks

So can you not even start the engine at all now? The immobilisor where the codes are stored is in the instrument cluster, which when it detects a legitimate transponder chip sends the ok to the ECU to allow the engine to start. It's very rare for ECUs to go down as far as I'm aware,so it's possible the immobilisor is faulty,or more likely the loop aerial around the ignition switch barrel could be faulty, have a loose plug,or have become unplugged completely. There is also a small transmitter/reciever box which actually picks up the information the transponder sends back and relays it to the immobilisor.A good idea would be to start at the ignition switch barrel with the loop aerial, and work your way along the wiring making sure everything is plugged in properly. The loop aerial is just a number of turns of very fine copper wire,so that could be checked with a multimeter set to measure ohms,no idea what you should get,but not zero or infinity, somewhere in the hundreds or low thousands of ohms I'd guess.
