its your cars way of saying ouch! you have to let it idle for a second first its because its the cogs changing direction so you have to give them time to stopbefore sending them backwards hope this helps. imagine stepping out of the car if it was still moving!

Here's how you prevent that grinding/crunching noise (and prevent
chipping/breaking the teeth on reverse):

1) Always come to a COMPLETE stop before attempting to engage reverse.
2) Once you've stopped, make sure you have the the clutch ALL THE WAY to the
floor.
3) Engage a FORWARD gear; I use 2nd, but any gear will do. Keep the clutch
DOWN.
4) Engage reverse. Presto, no grind, no crunch, ever!

Since reverse gear is not synchronized, it is essential to make sure the front
half of the transmission stops spinning before you engage reverse. Even if
you're at a complete stop with the engine idling and you push the clutch all
the way down, the front half of the tranny still takes considerable time to
stop spinning. If you don't want to wait, step number 3 will makes uses one
of the forward gear synchronizers stop it for you.

If you continue to get grind/crunch noises when following this procedure, it
means you clutch is not disengaging all the way (dragging) and is spinning up
the front half of the tranny again...

Before you fork out on a clutch bleed the slave cylinder first - it could be just air and the rod isn't releasing the clutch plate

hello mate,

having a similiar problem with my gear box!! sometimes its stiff as hell to go through all the gears(easier to go up them, than to get in reverse), but tends to losen up on a Drive, while on other days its starts and goes through the gears from the onset absolutely fine!!!

really dont understand it!!! tried changing the gear oil to the proper vw stuff, and it did make it better, but then the problem started returning, when it felt like it!!!

how do i blled the slave cylinder pal?

cheers

It will be near the clutch cover - will have a pipe running to it and a rod sticking out of the other end attached to a lever. Bet the cunning German's have placed it in the most unaccessable place. Get a mate to sit in the car and press the clutch pedal when you have opened the bleed nipple and tell him to hold the clutch down until you have tightened the nipple - do this a couple of times and don't foget to cover all surrounding areas with rags to catch the fluid.
