I'm looking at a BXE 1.9 tdi on 177k are they really that bad? How much would you value it at?

They are equally as reliable but they have 2 points that are a pita...
1-The intake is very sensitive to clogging up with soot compared to the other versions (just means it needs more cleaning
2-the cranckshaft sensor is on the flywheel... with the dual mass not a good idea because when that starts to ware it causes imbalance triggering an engine fault... 9 out of 10 times this means the sensor needs replacing although the dual mass flywheel is well within spec... also it is expensive to have it done since the gearbox needs to come off... the sensor itself is cheap just a pita to do...

One of the reasons you can pick them up quite cheaply. . Also that same engine is used in a lot of other VAG cars and they all have those 2 symptoms... and because they charge an arm and a leg to sort it out the cars are usually sold as spares or repairs... nothing to difficult to sort out if you can diy.

Is that definitely correct regards the 1.9 BXE with the gearbox having to come off to do the crank sensor, I replaced the flywheel on 1 of these BXE golfs but I can't remember seeing the crank sensor in on the flywheel.

I thought it was only the 2.0L golfs like my BKD that had that crank sensor on the flywheel, I replaced my crank sensor when replacing my flywheel when I had the box off, but I've since found out that you can replace the crank sensor on a Audi A3 BKD engine by removing the oil filter housing and assembly and get to the sensor that way, I'm assuming this would apply to my golf too with the same engine?

If so, maybe you can get to the BXE crank sensor the same way?

The last bxe I worked on was in a touran and it had the same setup as the BKD engine... I was surprised and yes I had to do the crankshaft sensor on it... I did look at that but I couldn't get it off that way so I removed the gearbox... and I hated every second of it...

Other than that and the intake that was seriously gummed up, after sorting it it was running perfect. It was for a mate he actually sold the car on because he wanted a tiguan.

Hard to give a value without knowing which car, what year, other spec, general overall condition.

I think @gerrywac has a BXE, so hopefully he can shed some light on reliability.
I still have my 07 Mk5 1.9tdi BXE engined Golf now a few weeks over 13 years old, 9 and a half years since I bought it as a one owner car with Fsh.
It's now on 94k, just over half mine and I have had very little bother with it and running sweetly as ever.
No breakdowns, ran out of fuel once, one accident, one boost pipe failure and several limp mode episodes but nothing that was down to the engine.
When I bought the car in December 2010 I joined several VW and VAG forums including this one to learn how to look after it and I came across a few posts about BXE engine failures that disturbed me quite a bit as I was concerned that I might have bought a dud. I spent quite a lot of time over several months researching the issue through numerous car and mechanic forums, technical groups and several VW mechanics. When I'd finished I found perhaps a dozen and a half posts of BXEs throwing a rod over a number of years but with little or no consistency over the age, mileage, oil use, service regime, revs/speed at failure etc and nothing to support suspicions over a batch of dodgy rods,, cranks, big end bearings, cap bolts which had been suggested and having regard to the large number of engines fitted to the 4 marques over several years nothing to suggest the numbers were in any way unusual or high.
As to the two specific points mentioned I haven't had any issue with either, I had seen mention of EGR sooting and checked at services but mine is in no way excessive and I've had no need to touch it. I can't say I've noticed a post over several years now so haven't had any reason to think it's anything other than rare and random and I stopped worrying several years ago
