Brake pad not sitting flush on Disc

Hi, I'm going to pick up a Golf GTTDi 130 at the weekend and it's not a bad car but..... on inspection the front left brake pad doesn't sit flush on the disc, it's only in contact with the inner half inch or so of the disc itself. I've felt the disc and there is no uneven wear but there is a bright strip where this contact is happening. The car seems to brake fine.

Any ideas on what may have caused it and is it an easy fix, or have I dropped the proverbial testicle in taking on a bit of a nail????

there may have been a stone wedged in there when they were first fitted, causing uneven wear. take them apart and see if you can see anything. or if you can't be arse take it to kwik fit, they will do a free brake inspection and tell you whats wrong with them, and you are under no obligation to get any work done!

how much difference in wear is there on the disc where it's making contact and not making contact?

if you leave it like this, then in 6 months the whole lot(pads and discs) will need replacing, or you could just get some new pads fitted now and it'll be sorted.

Nice one, I'll get them apart later on. Running a finger across the disc I couldn't feel any noticeable difference in wear but I know the car has only done about 50 miles in the last few months.

Thanks for the advice though.

Mine was like this when I took delivery of it - it had been sat for a couple of months without being moved much.

Had the calipers apart and the pads out and there was no obvious mechanical reason for it. Measured the disc thickness and there was some uneven wear across it but you couldn't pick it up just by running a finger across it. Also showed that they were getting close to the minimum thickness.

As the pads were pretty new I ran it for a bit to see if it sorted itself out - after about 1000 miles the pads had worn so I got even contact across them and has been fine since. I had nothing to lose doing this though as the discs will need changing the next time the pads need changing anyway . If they hadn't then I'dve changed the discs there & then.

Cheers for that.....

I've just driven it home and it doesn't feel that bad, just a bit of judder when braking but that disappears when the pedal is pushed more firmly. I might just have the discs checked/changed to be on the safe side but I have to say I'm impressed with the performance of the car.....it's my first Diesel!
