Having a bit of a hard time with my Golf at the moment. A couple of weeks ago the turbo disintegrated so that was replaced along with the intercooler.

Had it back 2 weeks all fine then all of a sudden it wont start. I got it to fire up briefly but it spluttered a bit and died. Now it will crank but will not fire up.

The garage have run it very briefly on EZ start to verify the timing is ok (had timing belts done while it was in for turbo surgery). I understand the BKD engines arent usually affected by the injector problems? We are at a bit of a loss as to what to try next really. They are suggesting to take the car to VW but to be honest we just cant afford that luxury!

I've done some fairly extensive research but can really find anyone who has had the same problem on a BKD....Any help or suggestions gratefully appreciated!

egr valves and throttle motors are common on these engines, and rather expensive. i`d check if the throttle isnt seized or something silly, seen that before. i presume the fuel pump primes? maybe crank it with the fuel hose from the filter into a tub

thats all i can think of right now

You are right there mate. The EGR valves are common as are the (not throttle body) but whats called the "Regulating flap" thats bolted to the side of the EGR valve. As far as i'm aware neither of these will stop your car from starting. Only make it run rough as nails. If you've had it scanned and its come up with nothing then i'd say it shouldnt be any of these.

Have you had it Dealer read or with a generic fault reader?? I only ask because it seems very odd to me that a problem nowadays with none starting doesnt show up on a scanner. I'm no expert mate but i defo get it to the dealers. It aint that much depending on where you are.

Thanks for the replies. The pipes and everything were cleaned after the turbo incident even got a new intercooler in case any bits were stuck in there. The car had run perfectly for two weeks prior to the starting issue and no hint of any issue

s before.

As far as I know the garage have a proper vagcom. I have a code reader which has worked before as the car has had the throttle body flap thing replaced just before christmas. this gave eml and a few fault codes as well as poor running.

Just an update for anyone searching similar issues in the future. Turns out it was the lift pump in the tank. Quite odd as the fuel filter was full to the brim (it was the first thing I checked) Must have been a very abrupt failure of the pump I guess.

Glad our local guys have done the job without it having to go to VW anyway!
