Rattly tappets/bottom end.

Large oil consumption, but thicker oil usually cures it.

Theres some gearbox fault too, but i cant remember if it affects the 1.4

Probly about the same as any other engine, when you think of it, in the VW range

 

mines 03 reg.... 45k on the clock now.... never let me down still runs sweet as a nut

I know the gearbox problem well, it's stung my Audi [] Will check the gearbox codes on any cars looked at anyway. Do the later 1.4s suffer from the rattles and oil consumption as well? Or should I say will they, with a few miles under them?

 

Missus had a Y reg one from brand new for 5 years and 70k - only thing we had go wrong was the water pump, which is common to all engines.

my wife has run that engine in a new lupo which we had from new 2003-2006 and her's had a bit of piston slap when cold but only lasted a few secs till a bit of heat quiten it down otherwise ok.

 

mines a 52 with 98000 miles ,runs well and never had a problem with the engine, had my cam belt changed a few months ago just to be on the safe side

 

Regarding the oil consumption, mine gets serviced every 10k, I check all fluid levels between services and I have NEVER had to top oil or anything like that up. Only things I put in are petrol, screenwash and air in the tyres. Never had any rattles from my car mechanical wise.... it only had 20k on the clock when I bought it and in the 25k I've done in it the only things I've had to replace are tyres, exhaust and rear wiper motor. IMO they're great cars if you can pick one up that hasnt been abused by previous owners. Bought mine used from the stealers but later found out that original owners were an older couple.... good to know no boy racers have had their wicked way with it! If you check the cars history in detail before buying I'm sure you'll find a great car [au] if looked after they last forever too [Y]
