Hi all

Being fairly new to the world of German cars (I.e. I've never owned one till now) I'm just wondering what your wish list would be for parts.

If you had about 5k to spend on the engine, suspension and brakes what would YOU buy and WHY?

I am basically wanting to know which brands are good and not so good and what sort of money your looking at for them.

I'm not interested in exterior mods unless it improves performance elswhere such as bigger air intakes on bumper for a front mount etc.

I am going to be starting on the suspension as I always do, then onto brakes and finally engine once I'm happy the car can handle more power.

I've been used to cars with over 300bhp for the last 5+ years so this little golf has a lot to live up to [:D]

Another question is, what transmission mods can be done? Does the golf have a LSD for example? If not can you get one? Can the std drive shafts handle lots of power without snapping, can you get an upgrade?

Cheers for any imput you guys have....

Yep as has been said diff is a good idea for the extra power. try to get one from the states to save a few quid.

Brake's ECS option which is Porsche callipers on floating discs is a good one there are others about but general feedback VFM and quality these are the best.

I would go for a 3inch downpipe and cat bypass system and get a version of VAG-COM to turn off the fault codes you will get from time to time.

18's will be needed for the big brakes and OZ are a pref brand due to weight saving benefits.

Then it is your big turbos garret gt25/28 and IHI are the pref you turbos although sportec do a KKK based upgrade, for this budget about ?1500 more if you need to get someone else to do a lot of the work, dialynx can supply you with the manifold required for the IHI and you will need some fabrication for exhaust pipes to match up with the downpipe.

Good luck and enjoy.

As a satisfied ECS 2v2 and Stage 1R owner I'll second that - however the kit fits under 17" wheels (I have a set for track use) and another major bonus is that spacers are not required. See www.ecstuning.com

Porsche Turbo brakes fit under TT comps better than alot of 18 inch wheels.... without spacers

Whatever suspension you go for a Neuspeed rear anti roll bar or similar is a must..makes a huge difference

Peloquin Diff is a great upgrade, actually strengthens the 5 speed box to allow more torque as well - cheaper than the Quaife - i might be importing a few at the old price (they are puttng the price up in January)

For ?5000 you should be able to get your suspension sorted and get a Big turbo upgrade for over 300 bhp if you buy carefully...not sure if you'll get your brakes done too in that budget

Bloody hell mate, Im not ever going to have a spare ?5k so I havnt thought that far into it!!!

The guys on here will be more than happy to help you spend it though! Theres a few 300 BHP+ around! If you put your post as ?5k to spend on performance, you may get a bit more interest, they will all be up for spending your money!!!

Hi all, thanks for the input [:D]

5K was just off the top of my head, I may end up spending more [:O]

But suspension is deffo first on the list.

The ECS stuff looks the nuts and fairly cheap as well given the current exchange rate [:D] Whos ordered from them in the past? Whats the shipping usually like and do they help out when it comes to **cough** duty. I'm used to paying none as the Jap importers are very helpful in that dept...

Cheers

You should talk to Richard Broadfield @ JBR Performance they import ECS from the States and are very helpful too. They are forum sponsors here.

The ECS stuff is very well put together. The discs have done 15k including 4 trackdays and are showing hardly any sign of wear, no cracking, and no corrosion due to cadmium coating. And absolutely no warping due to "tru-float" design. I have the 332mm 2v2 (very compact monobloc Brembo/Boxster 4-pots) on the front and 308mm Stage 1R vented on the back. Awesome stopping power and no fade ever. If you want to be really hardcore you could consider the 355mm Stage 4 for the front but I reckon the 332mm would get you out of any situation even if your car ends up more powerful than mine[:p].

For 5k i'd be having:

peoloquin lsd and ECS clutch upgrade

ECS 2v2 front brakes

With leftover 3k:

Eurojet FMIC

de-cat

and 2k towards IHI!

Fitting it all yourself the matey, cos i have a feeling labour on an LSD might be a bit hefty!

Ooooh wheres me debit card [:D]

I think them brakes look the nuts, what sort of pricing do JBR do for the kits? Prob with this is I'll have to upgrade the wheels now as well [|)] I see the 2v2 will work ok with 17's though so thats not too bad. I'm a bit of a track day nut so tend to go through tyres like an F1 team, therfore smaller wheels is good (Cheaper tyres) and I think for the weight of the car the 332mm discs should be more than enough. I had slightly smaller than that on my old GT4 and that weighed a lot more than the Golf.

Has anyone used www.vwspeed.co.uk before? The guy there is offering me a good discount on buying a complete R32 interior ally trim kit, Eibach front and rear ARB's and a few other smaller bits and bobs. Are they reliable and honest??

Cheers all, keep the ideas coming, after all spending my money is fun isn't it [:D]

Ohh, by the way, what good turbo upgrades are available? I noticed a few of you mentioning IHI, can you get a complete kit with an IHI turbo, what are the turbo specs (A/R etc) internal or external wastegate? BB or not, water cooled or not etc etc....

cheers

Yeah I fit pretty much everything myself, if I had a RR I'd tune it myself as well, fitted and mapped a few EMS's in my time, I love making looms....not [:(]

The only thing I refuse to do is rebuilding gearboxes....I hate them with a passion...

Shivers run down my spine when I think back to rebuilding my GT4 gearbox along with front diff and transfer box....Now I'm just gonna blow my brains out [}:)]

Haha good point. Ok more like

?900 on LSD/clutch upgrade and ?350 fitting (quoted by star)

?1100 on brakes and probably ?150 fitting?

Damn i hope i never come into any money [B)]

Might be time to convince the G/F we should go to america on holiday and i'll take some 2v2 brakes home in my suitcase....... [:p]

Jabbasport do complete IHI turbo kits but alot of people say they are overpriced, they do work well though......

BTW, is that apexi ecu's you are talking about wiring in?

finnily enough I fitted an Apexi Power Fc into my RX7, but no wiring involved as they are car specific and plug and play. I only had it in the car 6 days before flattening 2 lamp posts, doing about 5 360 spins and writting it off [:(]

In terms of others, I fitted a DTA P8PRO to my GT4 along with custom loom and larger throttle pot (giving this thought for the Golf as I am listed as a dealer with DTA fast so I get them cheap), it was a ball ache but worth it and no one had ever used the DTA in a GT4 before so it was a challenge. I've also done a Haltec into a GT4 too with custom loom. And helped a few others out mapping there GT4's fitted with the Apexi Power FC but most try and do it with the hand controller and you really need the Datalogit gear from Auz to do it right, ad a RR comes in handy too. You can only do so much mapping on the open road.

ooohhh now them turbo kits sound sweet [:D] I'll have to e-mail them and see what else I can find out about them kits...

So up to now in my head I've spent

?3k on a full on IHI BB turbo kit

?900ish on a brake conversion

?1k ish on suspension, ARB's bushes etc

?800ish on some 18's

?400ish on interior bits

?500 on other misc parts such as intake etc

poo poo...need more money [^] Looks like I'll be spending about 6k instead....gulp....

Now, what can I buy the wife to keep her as sweet as the car....hmmm, cheap flowers should do it [:D]
