Well, as a lot of you know the Xbox 360 will officially be available in Europe on the 2nd of December...

Now, should I get it straight away or wait for the PS3? Which one is meant to be better? Have any of you tried the XBox 360?

Also, what's the point in the premium pack with the HDD?

can of worms! lol

u need some sort of storage device with the 360 to save games! by the time u have bought a memory card u may as well get the premium pack cos its better value than buying all the bits! U also get a wireless controlled and the Live bits needed for online gaming! U only get a wired controller with the core pack!

If u havent pre-ordered a 360 early u will find it very hard to get it on the 2nd! some stored arent taking pre-orders though! I've pre-ordered the 360 with PGR3 and COD2 along with a 2nd wireless controller!

as for the ps3, rumours have it it may not be out for another year yet!

At the end of the day to make the most out of these consoles u need a High Definition LCD or Plasma TV!

The PS3 will not be with us until Xmas 06. By all accounts the 360
should have the better games as it has been commented on that a number
of developers are finding it hard to develop for the PS3, whereas the
360 is better to devlop for as Microsoft provide middleware to help. I
saw the xbox 360 running Call of Duty 2 in Hi Def at a recent show and
it looked very impressive. In the premium pack you get a lot of other
bits and pieces such as a wireless controller, xbox live headset ,
remote, hd component lead and the hard drive, which in total where you
to buy separtley would be lot more than the ?70 difference between the
core and premium pack. The hard drive is used to store saved games,
extra content such as extra levels, cars etc. available via xbox live,
it is also required to allow backward compatibility with exisiting xbox
games.

If you want to see how good the games are get yourself over to
www.gamespot.com or http://www.xboxyde.com/index_en.html and have a
look at the gameplay movies for Project Gotham 3, Gears of War and
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter.

Alternatively there's the Nintendo Revolution. Now many may scoff and
we've certainly seen no video from it but it looks like it has
potential and it looks like it's gonna be seriously original and NEW
(as opposed to just sequels and rehashed cack!!)

Before anyone rages into a load of figures, fill rates, poly counts and
mhz. Who cares? I just want to play something new that doesn't involve
being in world war 2, playing a dodgy FIFA spinoff, playing burnout for
the 99th iteration or being a GTA gangster... <again!>

For those who love their stats.

We've got some PS3 devkits at work. They're not final ones.. no,
they're half speed of the final one CPU wise. But they're already
faster than the final XB360. There you go. The PS3 is faster at the CPU
end on spec.

However, you have to really work at them and really have to be doing
some serious parallel processing stuff to get it all working at that
speed. It's more probable that these 2 machines will work out being the
same

Then again. They're connected to the same old joypad and are just going
to be running hires variants of the current generation games, so I'm
supprised they bothered to uprate the CPUs on either of them as opposed
to just boosting the graphics hardware! Ironically.. the fancy new
HiDef shooters and stuff they're banding about. Probably still not as
good as Halflife2!

Anyway.. I mustn't grumble. Faster machines means we don't have to work as hard to write fast code ;) My job just got easier

I would say go for the xbox 360 myself.

From what I've seen/heard (so far) it will be the better of the two. I have an xbox 1 and much prefer it to the PS2, so if I was getting one I would stick with the xbox.

One small niggle is that the 360 won't be backwards compatible though......so make sure you order plenty of games with it!

It will be compatible with 200 odd titles, but will need the hard drive as a download for each title will be needed.

The 360 is very backwards compatible, not only that but many of the
titles it is compatible with will be scaled up to 720p instead of the
480i that they are currently. This will include games such as Forza and
Halo 2. Both the 360 and PS3 will be similar in terms of their
abilities. One big difference however is that the Xbox 360 uses a
standard DVD drive and the PS3 uses a Blue Ray drive. Blue Ray can
potentially store 100Gb of data meaning PS3 games potentially could be
much bigger. This would only really matter for PS3 only games though in
reality. The downside of the Blue Ray drive is that the PS3 is likely
to be in excess of ?500 at release (some were initially saying closer
to ?1k though thats unlikely).

The Revolution will make or break Nintendo (though I'm sure that was
probably said of the Gamecube). You only have to look in Game to see
how little space Nintendo gets on the shelves these days. Whilst the
other 2 manufacturers target older audiences the Revolution is going to
be more about games that are fun and use an innovative control system.

With regard to the cpu issue - have you found that you can use all the
360's cores? Or was the programming based on just one core? I've heard
that almost nobody at this time can code properly for hyperthreaded
games.

Can someone shed some light on the Wi-Fi capabilites of the 360? It seems that Wi-Fi is integrated in the console, yet there is an optional Wireless Network Adapter...Can I connect the 360 to the Internet, and hence Xbox Live, with just the integrated Wi-Fi?

Not very, as microsoft have taken steps to prevent chipping this time around.
As has every console manufacturer for the past 15yrs, but everyone has been hacked. It's only a matter of time before its done..

As for the PS3 price, i cant believe theres any way that Sony will
release it for around ?500 - its suicide. Even though it has a massive
place in the market they would be seriously running a big risk.

I totally agree that it would be suicide, however the cost of their
technology is very high and that cost of ?500 will already be a
subsidised one.

go with the xbox 360 i have owned both the ps2 and the xbox and the ps2 just gave up the ghost whereas the xbox just keeps going, i dont agree that a high deff plasma or lcd will give the best picture and quality as it has been said by experts that the normal tube tv still offers the best picture in a like for like test....anyway viva las xbox

LOL what a fantastic comment. So a normal crt tv which is incapable of
showing more than 576 lines is going to show a better picture than a
screen with a resolution of 768 lines. This may have applied to the
Xbox in standard form but certainly not to a chipped box running in
720p or an xbox 360 running at 720p or 1080i. I have read reviews of
people that have actually played on the 360 and there is a substantial
difference running it at 480p compared to 720p. Yes a good CRT still
can produce a great pic but the next gen plasmas etc really are very
good. Put the right source into them and they blow a crt away.

In regards to LCD n Plasma's - Plasma TV's generally need re-gasing so no thanks on that one

LCD TV have only really been about for about 6 months now and are
slowly improving but then again you still need a big sum of pennies
to afford one and if your going to buy one at least make sure its HD TV
enabled as these seems to be the next step.

So looks like i will be holding back on the 'make the most of it' as
my current 28" Bush TV (?200 from safeways) will suit me fine in my
moments of need (PS2)

Randall I think you're a few years out of date there. LCD's have been
around for a good few years now but are still much more expensive than
plasma for the equivalent sized screen. As for regassing plasmas - yes
this may have applied to older ones but not the newer ones. Current
screens are expected to have over 60000 useable life (before any
regassing is needed) which equates to around watching tv for 8 hours a
day for 20 years - i.e a lifespan at least as long as a crt.

Ill be quite happy with a large widescreen CRT from the likes of Panasonic for the forseeable future.

For me, the prices of Plasmas and LCD's are absolutely extortionate, i
couldnt justify spending that much to get a better picture, when the
high end CRT's are very good anyway.

If you have not pre-ordered a xbox 360 your gonna have to wait until April next year....

Or buy from ebay at silly silly prices....

I might even put mine on there for about 1K
