Just phoned awesome and booked my car in for a set of Eibach pro kit -30mm's fitting next tuesday [:D] [:p]. Have been dying to get it lowered for a while, but the funds are now available.

Would have loved to try and book it for the 14th, and could have met some of the others off here that were going to the RR day, but unfortunately I gotta work that saturday so I cant go.... [:'(]

Will hopefully get it all washed and cleaned on monday, so will try and get some before and after pics up next week sometime too.

Thats over priced dude, the springs price is about right but its should not cost more than ?100 to fit including VAT.

Where are you from?, i know a garage near me that will do it for ?100.

Don't forget to do the shocks at the same time, otherwise it'll be in bits again in a few months, no point in paying twice for the same job........

That's gone up - Awesome charged me ?125 +VAT 18 months ago for fitting a full suspension set and aligning it afterwards.

I was told by many people on here that the standard shocks would be fine with my current mileage, and I cant afford to change the shocks aswell anyway!

Believe me, I looked around for places to get them fitted too.....but I wanted a reputable place so asked for recommendations on here a while ago - and got no responses!

I asked all the decent garages round my area that I know, and awesome's price was still the best.

Believe me, your current shocks will be (if they're not already) on their way out (they certainly will be deteriorating if you've done more than 35k miles) - think economies here, can you afford the extra ?180 for a set of Bilstein B4s now and have them fitted at the same time or is it easier to pay the ?180 + the ?167 fitting charge again in 6-12 months time?

I know I sound like I'm preaching here, but it really is a false economy to stick with standard dampers.

JBS are much closer than Awesome to you - how much do they charge?

JBS are only about 10miles closer than awesome, and I was quoted ?340 from there.

Yeah, I know it might be a false economy and I would like to change both, but I just dont have the extra cash at the moment, and I was told by many sources that my shocks would be fine as they've only done just over 16k.

It's just that the 4x4 look is really bugging me now, and its just gotta get lowered as it looks silly [:(]

How about save up until you can get the shocks as well. Basically your OEM shocks may work fine, but they're tuned to the spring rate of your OEM springs as well. Many people experience a crashy ride with just changing springs, but if you change shocks as well, the improvement is like you wouldn't believe.

I think this has answered a few questions of mine as well - have just fitted 18's and needs lowering, was going to go down the same route of fitting just the springs but the sense in fitting dampers at the same time has been bugging me.

The subject of fitting costs have also been on my mind since i have r32 arb's arriving shortly (well, the front one at least) - do I go to a pricier specialist like Awesome (or in my case I guess AMD since I'm only half an hour away) where they have done the work to other cars and have the experience, or go to my local garage who may be cheaper but don't have the experience?

Ive got a similar dilemma.

I needed new tyres and i didnt want to waste money on new tyres for my 16" wheels, therefore i decided to buy the alloys i really wanted (rs6) with new boots on. Problem solved except for my ride height!

I was gonna get some springs and keep the oem shocks but i keep finding threads like this which make me think twice.

Ive worked out that ill have about ?260 pound to spend on suspension in a few weeks (gotta go round looking like a range rover in the meantime).

Problem is, 260 squids may just about get me some springs and dampers (budget), but then no money to get them fitted.

Or, get some quality springs and run the oem shocks untill i can afford uprated dampers to match?

Or, just ride around on 18" rs6 wheels and save up for quality springs/dampers all round?

This could be ages!

Advice please?

Mine's also a 1.6 and I changed my suspension at 25K, by which time the rear shocks were already limp as a soggy rich tea biscuit, and it's the rears that make the biggest difference to overall handling.

Now my car goes like it's on rails, obviously quite a bit stiffer than stock, but overall more controlled, far less roll, squat and dive, and will be even tighter once I get the rear anti-roll bar on.

That does seem expensive... I live in the North West and use my local VW/Audi specialist (QRSport - http://www.qrsport.com/ ) or try Demon Tweeks if you don't mind the drive over to Wrexham. I also have Eibach springs on standard shocks and the car has done 83k. The springs were added at around 60k and all is still well.

Now iam getting confused!, u say u have stock dampers with eibach springs yeah, is the ride ok?, much diff to stock springs?, is it really bumpy?

Why are some saying uprated springs on stock dampers is a bad idea?

Yes mine are Pro springs on stock dampers and the ride is more bumpy than my girlfriends which had FK springs and dampers, however I like the ride. Like the others have said it will cause more wear on the stock dampers, but mine have done ok so far. Go for it, but maybe shop around for a better price! Good luck.

p.s I run upgraded springs and stock dampers on previous cars and they too have been ok.

They still advertise as VW/Audi specialists as of this month!

Are they not anymore?

Who are renn-tech and where are they?

I'm needing a cambelt change on my '99 1.8T. Looking for a decent vw specialist with a good rep. Was linning up qrsport as I'm near Chester. Not sure about Awesome anymore due to previous experience...

I live about 1 mile from QRS but now use Renn-Tech-UK. Tim and Daz left QRS and set up Renn-Tech-UK based just off the motorway in Ellesmere Port (junc after Outlet Village, then take 1st left after the Shell garage and follow road to the end). Just picked up my '99 1.8T from them today, as the water pump collapsed causing the cambelt to break!! Tim's rebuilt the head and replaced everything that needed doing. Reckons that whoever changed the cambelt last time did a really bad job.

Highly recommend you go to Renn-Tech mate as they know what they're doing and won't rip you off!!
