Window repair kit...be careful!!! ***Interesting Update***

I have recently purchased a window repair kit for my Golf (3-door, Drivers window) and gave them the correct part number, confirmed on the phone that it was all alloy window repair kit...collected the item, no problems.

So I have just removed my door card, the door cover, all the wires, etc. I open the box for the repair kit, ready to fit and...the clips are again plastic!!! WTF!!!

I wonder if VW on another 'cost saving' drive by putting the old redundant parts in boxes with superceeded numbers on them?

So this is just a warning to anyone who is purchasing the repair kit, to check in the box that the clips are actually metal...!!!

take em back, i bought the repair kit a while ago and they were metal clips. Ask them to check and give you one with metal clips.
I have replace this on 2 of my own cars and a mates car as well now and every time I have bought the repair kit from ebay as it's cheaper and definately made of metal as said in the description / shown in the picture [:)] never had any problems with any of the three vehicles I fitted them to.
Ebay seems to be more expensive for me...as the genuine kit cost me £38 all in.

Dont worry, I will be going back to VW...its just a bit annoying that I had pulled everything off, but now it all has to go back again!
I bought the kit from GSF which was a bit cheaper, but came with the rollers already on rails, saves a lot of faffing, just attach them to the skin ready to go :)

probably not genuine, not that it would matter much but once you fit the repair kit once or twice, you can do it after that in no time. its just getting a hang of the technique

They are and it still baffles the hell out of me why sooooooooooo many people buy parts there without even thinking to check PROPER prices first[facepalm].

I've used dozens and dozens of OEM repair kits and have always had metal clips, you must have been unlucky and probably got the very last plastic clipped repair kit in the world[<)][:DD].

Chris.
Yeah once you've done it a few times it doesn't take long to fit it together. And why put it all back in, just tape the window up or support it from inside, leave the door card off and pull the wire to get out the car when you need to, it'll be just fine aha [whistle]

No-one needs door cards and that while they're waiting for repairs [;)]
yeah true tape the window and put the metal frame with 4 or 5 bolts and leave the doorcard off. Only takes two minutes to do and 2 minutes to take everything off again
When you're actually doimg the work of replacing the mech, take the glass ALL the way out, there really is no advantage to leaving it in other than having to clean glue off the glass. It only takes seconds to lift it out but trust me it really does make the job a whole lot easier......

Your not the only one when my drivers side failed earlier on in the year I bought a whole new panel direct from my local vw dealer and it had plastic clips!!!!

They refused to believe on the phone they supplied it to me... I took it back when they finally re-ordered proper uprated replacement.

They take the mick!
I guess I was just a little surprised also as I purchased and changed the passenger side a couple of weeks ago and they were full metal clips.

Either way VW were happy to re-order me the kit, which arrived today and has the full metal clips. They were also at a loss as to why it was supplied with plastic clips...but hey-ho its all sorted now.

Just make sure you check all parts before attempting to fit! [:$]
do you have a part number for the kit please?
Do you have a 3-door of 5-door?

Also what kit do you want the part number for...passenger or drivers side, etc.?
I believe for a 5-door:

drivers door front = 1JM 898 462
passenger door front = 1JM 898 461

I think that the front and rear kits are the same, as I cant see a uniquely coded rear kit...but it may be worth confirming with the dealers before you buy/order.

For reference of anyone who may want to know, 3-door:

drivers door front = 1JE 898 100
passenger door front = 1JE 898 099
Thank you very much :)

Will get the OH to order one while he is at work today.

TYVM again!
***Interesting update***

I have just got back from VW and it seems that the full metal clips that superceeded the plastic clips have again been superceeded...by part plastic clips.

Apparently the plastic is a hardened nylon...but still it contains plastic and looks as if it could break over time especially as it is plastic where my old clip snapped last time.

It looks like the original clips were a white plastic, then they supplied the full metal clips, now they are brown plastic clips.

The dealer was good and opened a few boxes they had in stock to find me a pair of the full metal clips, which they happily gave me.

I just find it quite bizzare that VW appear to of reverted back again...?
