has anyone else had problems with wind noise from the tops of doors? My 5 door is only 8 days old and at any speed over 70 mph you can definatly here wind and the traffic on the other carrage way. I just noticed it as the pause in tracks on a cd, when you have got music on you dont really notice it. But it is driving me mad now and I am listning for it. Will the dealers do any think or will it be the usuall excusses.

It seems to be a common problem. Some people have had their door
seals replaced, and it hasn't helped. A mate took delivery of a
new Octavia the week before I got my GTI, and he's got the same problem
with that. He had the door seal replaced, which temporarily fixed
the problem. But after a week, it came back and was worse than
before. I think there's a design fault, somewhere.

My 5 door has been noisy around the top of the doors from new, and still is 10,000+ miles. The dealer did have it back twice and adjusted the doors, but no real difference, apart from I now have Rusty Door Bolts because they did'nt use the right size tool to undo them [:(]

I notice far more wheel noise than wind noise in my month old car. I did find a rear passenger "wound" the window up the other day, but not quite all the way, although it looked closed at first glances.

I only noticed it when cleaning the car, and found the water got in!

Sounds more likely to be the door seal, looking at the other posts.

Yep - we've had this in ours since new.

Had new door seals, doors adjusted etc etc etc.

It's still very poor (and it now looks like it's been crashed because the doors are so badly adjusted).

It's apparently a design or build fault and VW UK are aware of the problem - get onto your dealer - the more people that complain the more likely they are to do something about it - it's really not good enough in a car that costs nigh on 20K.

We're still waiting for written confirmation of this from our dealer - we are not aware of any fix yet - I've just prompted my wife to call the dealer now to get an update - I'll post here when we have some more news.

There is some slight wind noise with mine on the motorway. However every car I've ever had you could hear wind. Unless there is a draft coming into the car I wouldn't worry about it.
I have to say you're a lot more forgiving than me.

If we put up with poor quality the manufacturers and dealers will think they can get away with it.

For the record, our 1992 Audi 80 never had ANY wind noise at speeds of 90+.

Our 2001 Leon also had NO wind noise at speeds of 100mph+.

I think you are dead right Kenl, I will get mine back to the dealers when I get some time and see what they say. The more people that complain and all that. Now I have noticed it and I know other have the same prob. it makes me even more determined. If nothing else I should get a free coffee? But you are right about other cars as I said earlier the wifes MK4 so ok at 80/90 Mph, so why should i put up with wind noise on a new desingned car.

I would like to take this moment to say hello to all you Mk 5 GTI owners out there, I picked mine up this sunny afternoon from Barnards of Stowmarket.

I have a 5 door car in Reflex Silver, leather interior and the 17" wheels,on driving back I noticed a wind noise present, coming I believe from the drivers door area or window at about 55 mph, right at your ear level how annoying ,according to my passenger she can also hear a wind noise ,and `Yes the windows are fully shut `

After contacting the dealers and pushing the issue, they have contacted VW who say its a problem,Great the demo seemed fine,?24,000 for a load of wind noise.I have noticed that several people on here have already had seals replaced,so I will not be having that done straight away.I have noticed the shiny black door pillar panel is loose on the drivers side but Not on the other side Why??

I was sorry to leave behind my 2004 54 plate Golf GT 2 .0 TDI from which I travelled the grand sum of 12600 miles in 9 months. With Very Little noise.............

Gonna make me paranoid now, and I'll have to listen later... I'm with Chalky though, I've noticed the road noise from time to time - but never had an issue with wind noise that's made me go "that is *REALLY* bloody annoying!" :)

Our dealer have got back to us today saying "it's the mirrors" - it's going in for 2 days next week to be "sorted" (again).

[speculation]I'm guessing it's a seal or something between mirror and door that's damaged - wind enters the inside of the door and has to escape somewhere - it escapes at the rear of the door inside the car [/speculation]

We had the exact same problem in our '99 Ibiza Cupra when new (although that leaked water around the mirrors, not air).

We'll let you know how we get on....

The mirror thing could be right. Sure I read on vortex that the wind noise cure on the new Jeta in the US was to put some foam inside the mirror housings. From pics the mirros look the same.

If I find that post I'll link it on here.

Hi guys.

I took delivery of my GTI in April this year and have exactly the same issue with the wind noise. The car has gone in to have the drivers door re-aligned which hasn't helped jack! Door seals have not been replaced. I've been on about this to the dealers with no joy. So it seems the problem is worldwide!

Its probably a bit of a lottery. My 5-door suffers from the wind noise
problem too (along with a rattly door panel and a rear windscreen wiper
which comes on sometimes for no obvious reason when starting the car!)
I've only really noticed the wind noise from the driver's door. Will be
interesting to find out if the "mirror theory" sorts it.

I also get this problem. It's infuriating when it hasn't rained
for a few days and there's some dust on the rear screen. Perhaps
VW should add the self-scratching rear windscreen to their list of
standard kit.
