As the title really, will the 2L PD engines run without or with a failed in tank pump? Does the in tank pump just help it to start?

And are the diesel tanks and their pumps interchangeable or what other tanks/pumps combination fit a 2L bkd engined golf? Will a different tank+pump from a 1.9L golf run ok in the 2L bkd for example?

I'd appreciate the knowledgeable replies as always folks

The in tank pump is there for the cold starts and to help get the fuel up to pressure asap... and yes the car will start if it has failed it'll take longer for it to start though... so if it doesn't start in 3 turns than you've got a problem... simple to check remove the cable from the pump and try to start it without it connected (you do that at fist start, and it'll leave a code behind so you'll need to clear that)

all the diesel golfs with a 2.0 BKD have the same size tank and fuel pump, so you can swap both but in general if it is just the pump that is acting up all you need to replace is the pump (the hole is big enough to get the whole thing out) The only reason to replace the tank too is if it is leaking (crack or hole) but that is a bigger job than just replacing the in-tank pump.


*notes:
1- the 1.9 has a different in tank fuel pump so they are not compatible afaik.
2- the in-tank lift pump on all the BKD engines are the same so you an grab that from any VW as long as they have the same BKD (and their sister brand models if they have the same BKD engine... not the tank though that will have to come from a golf)

Do you know if all 2.0L golfs have the same diesel tank?
Is the 1.9L diesel tank different to the 2L or are they the same too?

afaik the 2.0 diesel all the use same tanks the 1.9's have a smaller in-tank fuel pump setup ( the access hole is smaller )
in other words, if you need to replace the tank get it from a mk5 with the 2.0 PD engine....

why do you want to replace the complete tank though? is it cracked?
