In response to the subject header, and not in order;

1) It is a Vauxhall

2) It will depreciate at a scary amount

3) The performance figures are not streets ahead of the Golf

4) It will most likely have several major faults and recalls

5) Customer care and after service at Vauxhall is utter crap

You would be silly to spend your own cash on the Vauxhall IMO.

1, Can't disagree with that!

2, Probably more so than the new GTI will do and more so than the R32 has done. On the other hand it may not?

3, No, but with a chip and a little tweaking I'm sure people will be getting near the 300bhp mark not long after it has been launched?

4, Probably, but then you could say that about any new model car? Look at the new GTI and the major recall it had when it first came out?

5, Not had the pleasure of dealing with Vauxhall's after care and service dept, but I'm guessing they can't be much worse than VW from time to time.

If you like the look of the VXR, then as Carlos says drive one and then drive the new GTI and see which you prefer?

This is my first vw. i had 4 vauxhalls before. I agree with the fact about depreciation. I only have the golf 4 months but i never had any problems with the astra. Build quality is just as good and vauxhalls are much easier worked at for service etc.One thing i can say is that the mk4 astra has much better handling than the mk4 golf which is woeful(standard suspension). As for vw customer service i have never had worse. Vauxhall could teach them a thing or too.I'm only talking about dealer service by the way. And talking about reliability i thing there is something badly wrong when a turbo needs replaced after 40,000miles. I'll not go into the saga i had with that.

I love the shape of the new astra but drive the two first and make your own mind up

I know 2 guys that have each run recent model Astra 2.2SRIs for 2-3 yrs and had hardly any problems with either. One of them has actually run 4 Astras(how boring?) and all have been very reliable. But I would not buy a Vauxhall because it's a Vauxhall. Golfs might not be perfect but when you tell someone that you drive a Golf; you usually get a positive response. But I drive an Astra? mmmm..

Agree with all the above about resale etc.

Only reason I would consider it - handling is apparently going to be tweaked by those people @ Hethel in Norfolk responsible for the best handling cars ever [;)] oh and more power as standard

response

1. plain snobbery

2. True as i was stung by this

3. No but with the money saved you would be knocking on 300bhp

4. I do belive if you read the MK5 section it is full of fault complaints

5. How would you know this if you never would buy one? the worst customer service i have ever had was from VW. Vauxhall aint much better right enough but VW service stinks to the highest
