I have yet to speak to anyone who MOT's cars that knows anything about this washers with xenons rule? They all just say they don't know of any such requirement![?]

I read thro' the big book on what is required for the MOT and surprise surprise found no mention of this washers thing?

But at 600-700 rubs a pair I'll be buggered if I'm driving around without protectors on[;)]

Sorry if it's been asked before but the bloody search keeps timing out[:(!].

Anyone know why?

The DOT made it compulsary for all Xenon equipped cars to have headlamp washers fitted as standard.

Their reasoning behind this is that Xenon lamps produce much more light that conventional lights, and if it were dirty, then the light reflected off the dirty glass could cause danger to other road users.

What makes it so pointless is:

Dirty headlamps, shining light poorly could happen on any car, not just one with Xenons.

Headlamp washer jets dont do F-all. so 2bob to the idea that they keep the glass clean

A popular misconception is that Xenon lights get so hot, that they need cooling down with a spray of water every so often [)]

Hahahaha

I read on a site somewhere that the DOT rules only apply to NEW CARS MADE, not to aftermarket fitted xenons, and they apparently had top lawyers look in to it as well!!!, they couldnt find anything that says that if xenons are retrofitted that they must have the auto leveling and washers fitted, my 2 pence, i,ll look for the website and post it up later on, not feeling right!, maybe flue?[:(]

Headlamp washer jets dont do F-all.

Yes they do. They spray over the bonnet making a bloomin streaky mess[V]

There must be some way of disabling them?

I wouldn't have thought so if it was a legal requiement[?]

Other thing to bear in mind regarding retro-fitted Xenons, is the light output colour, which must be either white or yellow according to the MOT.

I got caught out by a fussy MOT tester over my VAG Part HID retro-fit kit, that wouldn't pass my car, due to the light output being to blue.
