I have a 1.8T golf myself and a friend of mine has just brought one but his has Oettinger decals, badges and on the number plate. It also has a bodykit and Oettinger exhaust.

Neither of us has heard of Oettinger before are they a dealer or tuner and where can we find out about them and their products?

His car cannot be standard as it leaves mine standing. Other modifications that we know of are AP Racing 4 piston front brake calipers, Forge dump valve, it has been lowered, has 17" Speedline Chrono wheels and Hella magic colours rear lights.

Unfortunately he brought it from auction and the previous owners on the V5 when he got it have not responded to his requests for information on the modifications.

All I can say is that my Golf has K&N filter, Milltek exhaust, Forge recirc dump valve and Superchips 180bhp but he leaves me standing yet it is the original engine but must really have some serious under bonnet modifications that we are unaware of!

Any help and assistance very welcomed. Thanks!

Oettinger is a respected old-skool German tuning firm that's been on the VW/Audi scene for decades, in Germany you can (or could - might not be the case now) even buy Oettinger parts from VW dealers. The quality of Oettinger stuff is top notch. Its main rival is ABT, also based in Germany. Both do engine and chassis mods and decent body kits that look like factory specials.

Thanks thats great - I have seen the bodykit and his exhaust on that site now thats a great help. [Y]

One other point does anyone on here know anything about Sportstek as they carried out the Oettinger "conversion" on his car but neither of us know any more of this company - do they still import Oettinger stuff?

The last number (from the invoices) we have for Sportstek was 01327 312501 but this was back in late 2000 and we think they might have moved if they are still around that is!

From what we can gather this car was their demonstrator from new and they did the "conversion" work although it does not list what the engine "conversion" consisted of, however, I now think it is the same conversion as listed on Oettingers own site.

Thanks for your very usefull information and prompt help!

I've heard of them and seen the odd parts on cars on the road in the past but never paid them that much attention really. Looking at their site though, the demo cars certainly look the business, that Golf is something else!

Oettinger listed 2 main conversions for the 1.8T.

first was a chip, which took power upto around 195bhp

second stage was a new KO4 turbo, catback exhaust and chip - power approx 240bhp.

Back in the early days of mrk4's (1998), Oettinger was probably the first company to offer the KO4 turbo package, and it cost around £4k back then!

Also i think sportstec is linked to amd or is a stand alone tuning company that does upgrade packages
Isn't that Sportec? Unless the OP made a typo then it could be a different company.

I got my car with a full Oettinger conversion with big turbo, exhaust, chip and that takes it upto 235bhp. Mine was done at RSD who are one of the main dealers. I beleive it cost the previous owner in the region of 5 grand! Had to be sent to germany to as RSD had never done an ARZ car before. Goes very well [6]

Big turbo? [^o)] Now if you quote figures of around 335bhp........[;)]

Out of interest, what turbo would have been fitted to this car apart from an obvious K03sport or K04 001 hybrid?

I have spent the last 7 weeks in france (for my sins)

and at a renault dealer in the back of the shop was one of the first production MK2 golf gti´s with OTTINGER motorsport engine, wheels and body kit.

The dealer later told me he was restoring it to new and that it was the 1.8 enging tuned to 140BHP and with only a weight of 840KG so by any means it is a very fast golf for the year and he rekons it is worth about 8-9 thousand quid [:O]

Well its bigger than the K03 that shud be there anyway. Not sure exactly which turbo it is as the previous owner had it fitted and i havent played with the engine enough to see it as yet (hopefully wont have to play with enuf ever!). Happy with the performance but its way over priced as u can get almost the same kit elsewhere for half the cash. The guy i got it from was a bit neurotic tho and seemed to be under the idea that an Oettinger conversion is much safer option because they had something to do with VW at some point. Think he paid a little too much attention to the salesman myself tho...

Don't VW honour your warranty if it has a oettinger chip?

Other than that they produce top quality stuff[Y]

Not sure to be honest, my car was out of warranty when i got it so it didnt apply to me. Good quality on most stuff, my exhaust rusted and cracked around the centre box after 4 years so had to have the centre box replaced by an aftermarket specialist. The Oettinger warranty on the exhaust is only a year.

They've been around since the the days of beetles and Porsche 356's but used to be called Okrasa - they made performace parts and engines for them both, my dad is well into old VW's and Porkers and this stuff is like the holy grail to him. VW dealers actually offer Oettinger stuff as an option in Germany all under warranty.

Incidentally another story.... Recaro used to be a coachbuilders and built the 356's for Porsche, when the 911 was launched they couldn't cope with the production and made seats for them instead.

Every day's a school day.
