My Kenwood MP3 head unit died on me a few months ago and Im not bothered getting it fixed as it went for repairs once already and I fancy a change. Currently using my 6 years old Kenwood MD head unit and its not fun only have 80 mins max of music. (yes Im a lazy bugger who cant be arsed to change discs)

Basically looking for a good MP3/WMA CD head unit for under ?150 so if anyone has any recommendations, let me know. Always been a fan of Kenwoods, but may give another brand a go. Also, if anyone is selling a secondhand 'recent' mp3/wma enabled head unit, please let me know as I might be interested.

Thanks, Ray

Del - Was looking at that Pioneer one myself.[:D]

There's also a Kenwood one Here, but I think there's a bit too much going on there.

Also quite tempted with this Blaupunkt one Here, looks nice and simple and i'm quite pleased with my previous Blaupunkt.

Do you's think the Pioneer one would be better[?][?]

Thanks guys! I didnt know about that site (even though I've been searching Google) but both the pioneer and kenwood looks like just what I need. I think the kenwood is just edging ahead cos I like LED/dot matrix not LCD displays as the track names look better. I can see the Pioneer red/blue suiting the Golf illumination more though. BTW, LMAO about the extra MOJO!

My last Kenwood was a MP6090R.

Think I shall be buying one of these in the new year. Thanks again!

Well in my opinion, ?150 isn't going to get you anything anywhere near decent these days mate, nowadays you get what you pay for and i'd seriously think about upping your budget.. For a HU that's anywhere near decent you need to be spending at least ?250+ to get decent sound and good features. I had a pioneer CD HU for about 3&1/2 years which cost me ?180 THEN, and i found that it was still always lacking, both sound and features! So, if i were you i'd seriously up your budget whether you can afford it or not. If you can't, leave it until you can but don't scrimp now and regret it later! [:)]

Had the Pioneer DEH77MP for a few weeks mate, and cannot praise it enough!! Fantastic simplistic looks.. but the sound is brilliant, really transforms even through standard speakers!

I got my 3 month old one off eBay for ?170...

Thanks all so far!

Ooooh, the Alpine does look nice [:D] Loving the multi allumination! Boy, only been back on the forum 2 days and already been swayed to spend more than I allocated for! Hmm I am tempted now. Got to see if I can stretch to that much.

TBH, I never liked the look of Alpine units cos I really dont like non-dot matrix (i.e. LCD) displays and a lot of the ones below ?200 use LCDs. Guess it depends on personal preference really but I like all that info on the display. I like the track name AS WELL as the time of the track and the Alpine suggested does look like it does that (maybe a bit overkill in fact).

Thanks Chris, not sure I like the look of the Pioneer, just a tad too minimist for my liking in the car. Strange but I like funky lights in the car, and minimist in the living room!

Im not a major ICE nut, so long as it sounds good and displays enough info, Im pleased. Not really into sub woofers and amps etc. Just running on the standard speakers and my last Kenwood did a very good job of it imo.

One thing I WOULD like though is the MP3/WMA processor to be faster than my Kenwood. Mine was one of the first to come out so it had a bit of a lag between skipping track and also the fast forward and rewind (i.e. when u hold it down like on CD player) on MP3s was a bit cack. Im hoping things have improved now speedwise.

I just fitted an Alpine in my Golf yesterday- Superb.

I went for the CDA-9835R http://www.alpine-europe.com/alpine/cms/details.php?p=275&details=1 which has their 'bio-lite' display - stuffed full of features, but above all sounds fantastic.

Actually got it from a high street seller cheaper than any web site I have found, just shows it is worth popping in and having a chat with them [^]
