Just wondering what your views are on which 1.8T 150 engine is the best one to go for for tuning etc.

I will soon be looking for a 20vt and want to get the best engine. Which models and years are which engine codes etc?

The ones not found in the Golf are the best ones. Otherwise, probably AGU with tigher internals and big port head.
But if your just gonna do a remap then aum I woulda thought with the k03s?

Without a doubt the AUM engine is the best for tuning, as these have a slightly larger turbo and injectors. When remapped they can give anything between 205 bhp and one member on here managed to get 241bhp from a jabba remap with no other mods. These engines are post 2000.

The other main engine used is the AGU which has a KO3 turbo and smaller injectors and can only be remapped to around 190 bhp with no other mods. These were used from 1998 to 2000.

There is also another engine with the code ARZ, it has the KO3 turbo but slightly larger injectors I think??? I'm really not too sure about this engine but it was only used for around 8 months in 2000.

Hope this helps.

What exactly are yours plans for the car?

As said if you are just going down the re-map and exhaust road then go for the AUM, but if you have plans for big tuning then go for the AGU as has stronger internals.

The short term plans are carbonio air intake (or similar), some sort of exhaust, chip/remap and possibly an uprated intercooler.

Long term would possibly be to get it K04'd etc.

This is good news as I have the AGU .... but only worry is that, as someone mentioned in another thread, the AGU doesn't have traction control. So you might have trouble getting that power down on the road, espescially in winter! [:S]

Wasnt he at Crail?!

Star Performance and Custom Code must be a bunch of Monkeys as Gary and I needed a lot more than just a remap from our AUQ engines to get that same 241bhp figure!!!

No, he was at Santa Pod, he reckon's the timing gear at Crail isn't all that [:p]

Obviously we made a mistake and went to the wrong tuner(s).
To be honest, I'm a little gutted as I could have had 240bhp for around ?500 then added a Carbonio and had another 12bhp.
Still, you live and learn [:^)]

Ha ha! Aye, you do live and learn.

Speaking of which, I must get round to ordering myself a bad boy bonnet as I hear the aerodynamic efficiency increase on one of these is equal to the performance gain from whooshy dump valve. [8-|]

tis true, that, a big wing and a shopping list on your doors will add more hp than your local chip shop!

If long term plans are to get a KO4 then i would go for the AGU as it is the stronger engine of the two, however as said it doesn't have traction control, but i wouldn't be too bothered about that.

I have an AGU (mines w 2000) too, thinking of getting it Revo'd the sooner the better (had a mk3 VR6 before so miss the power just a little although still love my 1.8t!)!!

Chris -- are you the moderator for CruiseNWales? If so I may just know who you are!!

AUM is better for re-mapping as it has the better turbo and can be sorted through the diagnostis port in under an hour dependin on generic map or custom. AGU apparently needs the ecu removed. From what i can gather from the specialists there is such little difference in the internals that unless your aim is over 300bhp, (undrivable in front wheel drive but lots of fun) then it doesn't really matter. I've just had my AUM mapped and it eats integra type R's and brit spec scooby's.

Just my humble opinion though,

Stu.
