Wheel Bearing Noise?

I have just got a new to me 05 DSG GTi (24k miles) [:D]and over the last week there has been a wheel bearing noise from the car[:(]. It was serviced and I asked them to look into this as the warranty runs out this coming week. The dealership put it down to tyre noise!! I must admit I was not convinced so took it for it's MoT at a friends garage. We took it for a test drive and it was plain as day not tyre noise (the route we took was over differing tarmac), but no play in any of the bearings. The only way to describe it is like a wheel bearing going a metallic grinding noise constantly in the background. The old trick of side to side steering to see if it gets louder in one direction made no difference. However when the brakes are applied the noise increases slightly (not the brakes though). I have searched a few forums and wheel bearings have been known to go at this age and mileage. So a couple of questions spring to mind. If I take it back to the dealers (Tuesday) and try to get them to admit there is an issue. Now will it be done under warranty as this runs out on Wed this week! Could it be something to do with the DSG? I don't know about these really. The other is should I just consider the extended warranty at ?400 for the 4th year do people think this is any good and have they had good / bad experiences with he extended warranty?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

Tell them you have had a second opinion and your not happy with their theory of being tyre noise, see if they will agree to cover it, if it develops into something that requires attention at a later date. Also point out that you know that this problem is not uncommon on this model, they should oblige you and stand by it.!!! [:^)]

Thanks Guys will pay them a visit on Tuesday. The discs are fine there is no shake through the steering wheel and they did not make any noise on the MoT as I was there. Will let you know if the stealer plays ball[:)]

What tyres are you running. I had Bridgestone Potenza on my GT. I read on a German web site they get noisy with age as the blocks wear uneaven and you end up with a saw tooth effect creating lots of noise.

I was sick of my noisy car, so as a last resort threw two less than half worn potenza's away for some new goodyears. The differance is remarkable.

I too thought that the noise could not be down to tyres, i was wrong.

Hope this helps.

I had this problem when I was running Yokohama prada tyres. I took it to two different dealers to complain about a wheel bearing problem. They both said it was tyre noise. I didn't believe them and tried on another set of wheels with different tyres. The problem was the Yokohama tyres not the wheel bearing. So now I am running Toyo proxys T1-R's which have been fine. Now on the second set.

Had the same problem on my 05 GTI ...typically with one week left on the warranty....took it to the stealer to check it wasnt a wheel bearing. They blamed the tyres.....which a 3 month old Bridgestones with 3k miles on them....the noise almost goes away on fresh tarmac...so i guess it is the tyres.....but there's always that lingering doubt it's the bearing..

Thanks guys intresting. I have a set of Goodyears on the rear so might swop them over before I go to the dealers. I ran the car over a road with a change in tarmac and you can hear the tyre noise drop considerably, however there is this metalic rumble still present. I am not to sure now will go tomorrow. On a seperate note did you go for the extended warrenty?

Funny you should say that as mine was worse on fresh tarmac.

I've had a wheel bearing noise for a little while, which, looking back, seems to have started when I swapped my tyres front to back, as the fronts were about half worn. Haven't had time to try swapping them back, yet, but this thread has me almost sure that it's the tyres making the noise. Road surface definitely does change the noise, but it's not changed much, if at all, with time.

My warranty runs out in June, so time to sort it, but you need to be sure and get it fixed now, if it is a bearing.

I had the same problem on my 05 GTI the noise was worse on some surfaces and hardly noticable on others, the dealer said it was tyres (which I found difficult to believe at the time as they looked fine) anyway after a lot of faffing about with the tyres I had both rear wheel bearings changed under warranty.

Went to the stealers and got a tech out in the car with me. He spent 20 minutes in the car and came to the decision it was tyre noise. [:|] (Yoki AVS decibel front Goodyear eagles rear)He did mention the rears are usually to blame as the inside edge wears and cause the noise! He also said it sounds like the front of the car is making the noise even though the rear is to blame! So we left it that I would extend the warranty and see how it was in a month. In the meantime I will swap the tyres around to see if that changes the noise. Ideally would like to swap all wheels on the car with another one. I will keep all posted. I am interested in davidk response though to see if that sorted his car.
