Just a thought...nearly went for a 206 Gti myself, but the wife wanted 5 doors and something not built like a paper bag with a baby in mind.

So it was a toss up between the Golf and a BMW 318.

To be honest part of me wishes I'd gone for the BM

I too was going to look at a Civit Type R, and after asking the local stealer to arrange a test drive when they got one into the country, i never heard from them again.

moved from Passat 110 Tdi Estate back to a Golf after 3 years of bliss with the big cruiser. It was just that despite being quick(ish), economical and having bags of room (for a quicky in the back) it just didn't stir the soul.

I was considering a A3 130 Tdi Sport but that was just a tad to small. If Skoda had a Superb Estate at the time I might have been tempted by it but I just don't need the space in the back anymore.

Yes I did post this topic twice....1st time I clicked on 'post topic' then left the room. When I came back my screen had the 'can't find page' whatsit up and I could't find my post so thought something had gone wrong!!!

So you all think I would have regreted getting a BM in the end?

I was looking at a 00 318i coupe in old model but was on look for current model...also test drove a Focus ST170 - wanted it cause of it's rarity but was just a little too much 8K more than Golf. I always had the perception - ah GTI I'll never get insured in one, they'll laugh me off the phone but paid same insurance as would've with the Focus ST170, GTI has only 20 less horses and will hold value much more than an ST...

I did see a €29,000 '02 (€35,400 new) for sale the weekend before I got the GTI and I did for a sec go, "hang on, will I" but glad I got the Golf....

Almost got a Lexus IS200.... seeing one drive passed with lots of door dings down the side when I was test driving the GTi put me right off (looked as if the door panels had been made of tin foil).

Driving in my mates one the other day confirmed what a good choice I made with the GTI, the IS200 performance was dour and was no way as solid.

Sitting in a 996 turbo however..........

Yeah, I was tempted by the Lexus Is200 too!

After a test drive my heart sank. Wicked gear change, lovely exterior and road presence, cool sat-nav. Crap interior, cheap feeling, typically japanese. Windows etched with 'Toyota' (yikes), Steering that has NO self centreing, and hence feels like steering a boot or bus! Smooth engine, but absolutely no power whatsoever compared to my then Gti 1.8t

Looked at S3's, but ultimately couldn't afford a new one.

Next car's gonna have to be 6 cylinders and have rear or all wheel drive [^]

Very nearly bought a Mazda Xedos. Ex Mazda UK press car 2.0 V6 full electrics leather and nice Alloys but the Mazda stealer wouldn't give me a decent price for the 626 that I'd bought second hand from them a year earlier.

So went a testing other cars, none of the local dealers had a 1.8T GTI that I could try so ended up trying a 5 month old demonstrator from a dealer whilst I was away on a business trip in Suffolk and went back the next day and bought it. That was 3 and a half years ago and I'm still not bored with my Golf (bit of history I got bored after about 3 months of previous cars).
