Alright everyone

This forum has been a great help so far with me trying to figure out what i am wanting to purchase for my Volkswagen Bora.

I was wondering if someone would be able to tell me what type of front
lights these are because i really think they are hot and am going to
try and get myself hooked up

Does anyone know where i would be able to buy them?

Cheers !

The lights on the Bora are OEM VW xenons, you can get them but they are
pretty rare and expensive to get the parts. They're normally a
factory fitted optional extra.

Hi mate,

Firstly let me wish you GOOD LUCK!, i've been looking for some oem Bora xenons for 2 years now and still not found them lol! [:p]

Problem is they were never a popular option on the Bora and the Bora itself was not very popular in the UK anyway, so used sets are as rare as rocking horse poo!

There are always loads on ebay.de for sale and they usually go for around ?500 but they are for LHD cars and the beam pattern will be wrong for our roads

RHD ones are available new from the dealers and will set you back ?1400ish for all the bits required!! [:O]

Appreciate the reply mate. Im not planning on spending ?1400 on a set of front lights, i dont think anyone is!

Is there anyway to modify the lights solds on ebay.de for around ?500 to make them road legal over here in the UK?

I have a good friend of mine that owns two Volkswagen Garages, do
you think if i spoke to him he might be able to get hold of some for me?

I thought these lights would be a popular product because they look the business!

Do you come across them on eBay.co.uk often?

The lights sold on ebay.de are all european LHD beam pattern and give a beam pattern that looks like __/ __/ on the road, if used over here the beam 'kickup' would blind oncoming traffic, they do however have a lever inside the lamp (known as a tourist lever) which enables you to cut out the kickup for when travelling abroad, the beam pattern would than look like __ __ , this would prevent you blinding oncoming traffic but would reduce the usuable light output and would defeat the object of having xenon lights imo...

The only way to achieve the correct RHD beam pattern of \__ \__ is to buy RHD lamp units unfortunately

If your friend can get you any lamps ensure they are 2003 on spec ones as the ballasts and igniters are bulit in on these lamps as opposed to earlier ones which need lots of ancillary equipment...

Also bear in mind that you will need 10-12 pin Xenon loom adapters and will have to carry out an internal wiring mod to the lights to enable your dash switch to level the lights, also on the Bora a mod to the stalk wiring is required so that the xenons will stay lit when on main beam...

There is also the legal requirement to have headlamp washers and auto levelling (around ?200) in conjunction with xenon lights, some people don't bother and have had no trouble come MOT time, others have though.....

In 2+ years of scouring ebay.co.uk i have only ever come across 1 set of LHD lamps, the RHD's are soooper rare!

If your mate can get reasonably priced RHD's, count me in...... [:p][:D]

Just out of interest mate, is it just the look of the lights you are after or are you more interested in improving the light output?

I want the oem xenons because i find the standard lamps very poor and as i do a lot of night driving on unlit country roads i want the best lighting performance available whilst staying within the law, and oem xenons fit the bill perfectly imo..

If you are more interested in the cosmetics, have you considered the direct replacement halogen projector lamps from the likes of FK etc... they have the xenon look with halogen performance but can be had for around ?200 all in...

Anyone know if the projector lamps are any better than the standard ones?
I got used to running a MkII GTI with 160 / 100 watt headlamp bulbs and 130 watt spot lamps, so the Bora lamps are like a couple of candles and being plastic lamps they won't be too keen on high wattage bulbs.

Beddie i really appreciate such an in depth explaination there. I was
wanting to get hold of OEM Xenons not only for the extremely good
lighting preformance but the look of the lights aswell.

I dont think i am willing to spend ?1400+ just for an improvement of
lighting. Which only leaves me with one choice, to get what you
suggested above! Its a real shame but unfortunately i dont have that
sort of cash laying around at the moment.

Do you know where i would be able to get halogen projector lamps which
would look almost the exact same, if not identical to the OEM Xenons?

You have been a great help so far!

I've been trying to find a definative answer on that too, a lot of guys on www.vwvortex.com are running them as the Bora (Jetta) is far more popular over in the US....

They seem to be very impressed with them in regard to light output but the quality of some of the cheaper ebay ones is a bit suspect apparently, there are two types available over there at the moment with either halogen or xenon projectors...

A popular mod is to buy some projector headlights and drop a HID lamp kit in them, this does seem to give almost oem xenon performance at a much lower cost but it is imperative to use the 'xenon' type projector lamps as some of the guys over there have dropped HID kits into lamps designed for halogen bulbs and the beam pattern and light output is just all over the place.....

Again the unpopularity of the Bora over here causes a problem as all of the 'xenon' type projectors are for LHD and the only type of projector lamp that is readily available in RHD is the FK Halogen Projectors with angel eyes..

As a temporary measure i have upgraded the H4 bulbs in my Bora to Osram Silverstars and the side lights to Philips Bluevision, these do give a significant improvemnt over the stock lamps and at around ?20 are well worth trying imo... [:D]

Alright Beddie

What do you think your plans are going to be in the near future then when it comes to getting new front lights?

You going to try and see if you can keep getting hold of the OEM Xenons
or give up and move towards something like the FK Halogen Projectors
with angel eyes? Do you know where i would be able to get hold of these
and recommended bulbs?

Cheers

Hi gENERIX...

I'll always want the oem xenons tbh mate and will always be keeping an eye out for some and scouring ebay etc.., but i've looked for so long without success and now that the Bora is out of production stocks are drying up fast..... [:(]

Ideally i'd love to find a supplier who had enough stock so that i could sort out a group buy on the forum as there seems to be plenty of peeps on here who would want a set, and a group purchase should drive the price down a bit for us...

I have got a couple of irons in the fire so to speak in regard to sourcing some, and as we speak the Guru of group buys for uk-mkivs is trying his very best to find some, rest assured if something does come up i'll let all the Bora peeps know asap! [:D]

Failing all the above then FK projectors with some uprated bulbs or even better retro fitted with Bosch D2S xenon projector capsules will be probably the road i go down.....

Alright mate

Unfortunately these alloys are out of production. The guy that owns
this Bora was able to get them from a Japanese Importer a while back.

He has spoke about selling them before and im sure there will be a
number of people wanting to place a bid for them. He will definately
get over the ?2k mark for them simply for the fact that the amount of
people that like them and cant get hold of them anywhere.

Alright mate

Cheers for the reply. What do you recommend mate, that i wait and see
if anyone is going to be able to get hold of a group buy for the OEM
Xenons or get myself some FK Projectors with uprated bulbs? I am not
going to have the money for new front lights until Febuary so it leaves
me sometime to wait anyway!

If i was able to get hold of OEM Xenons and taken them to garages close
to where i stay, would they be able to fit them for me along with all
the wiring etc?

Would you be able to point out where i could get hold of some FK
Projectors along with Bosch D2S xenon projector capsules for a
reasonable price?

Cheers mate, you have been a real outstanding help!

Hi mate,

The wait for oem xenons could go on for quite some while unfortunately so your best bet may be some FK projectors and fit them with some good quality uprated halogen bulbs, Osram Silverstars are very good or you could go for a Xenon Look bulb if you wish [:D]

In regard to fitting oem xenons, a good auto electrician should be able to fit them for you, but it is not a massive job to do yourself as you can buy the 10-12 pin adaptors to get the lamps working, the only other mod involves some wiring to the lighting circuit behind the steering wheel to enable the high beams to function correctly...

FK projectors for the Bora should be available from www.gwentvw.co.uk and the only suppliers for the D2S capsules i have found is in the states so far, i'm looking for a UK supplier at the moment, i'll let you know mate [:D]

Alright mate

I appreciate the quick response mate. I checked out the website you
mentioned but unfortunately the site did not successfuly load even
after a number of attempts. If you could point out somewhere else i
might be able to get hold of FK Projectors it would be highly
appreciated. If you manage to find a UK supplier for the D2S capsules
you mentioned it will be outstanding!

Cheers [:)]
