I think like others have already said, cameras in built up areas are acceptable, and can also see the reasoning for a small charge to help pay for improvments to such devices. (hopefully somthing like those self inflating speed bumps so you don't need a range rover to drive down to your local shop)
I don't agree with speed camera's on dual carrageways or motorways at all, as i think in this situation and travelling at these speeds ( averaging 80mph in all honesty without the risk of being done) they create to much of a distraction. In my opinion the problem of high speed travelling is the amount of stopping distance people allow themselves between other cars. I do try and keep a good distance myself, but normally give up when some tosser uses that space to quickly swerve out into the outside lane without indicating.
I would like to see camera's set up to measure this distance between cars, rather than the speed in which they are travelling, and ultimately if the results see any decrease in accidents, maybe then consider raising the speed limit. In my eyes this would see a far better result than speeders.
