Luckilly it happened in this nice weather, i feel sorry for anyone who has had this problem whilst it was raining.

I tried to book it in to dealer but they fully booked till next friday, Service bloke said they did 9 that day!

Don't want to do it myself as everthing i touch breaks [:$]

I recommend you get the vw repair kit (not aware of other kits available) around ?22 for one door, but i'm getting both front doors done.

Don't do what i did and just leave it till the glass drops, book your car in now.

The same thing happened to mine and it was just under 5 years old, it was not raining but it was very cold! Its a bugger, we got the repair kit though as the old plastic bits  had pretty much disintegrated.

Why is it the passenger one that seems to go more often? Surely it should be the one that gets used most i.e. the drivers. Mine went when the car was about 2 years old.

I'd definately recommend you do it yourself. It really isn't that difficult and it'll save you the ?40+ an hour for labour.

Take a look;

Happened to me on a snowy morning in january on way to work. - Bang! - window drops into door.

I didn't have time to buy the repair kit and do it myself and was very concerned re the security of the car, so i called VW, who told me i'd have to wait a week before they could book me in. After some gentle persuasion, they told me if i bought it straight to them, they would sort it.

Final bill - ?175!!!!

Would defo recommend that you buy the repair kit for 20 odd quid and give it a go yourself in your garage - there are loads of good guides around.

Just for information, here in France VW generally take the whole repair on charge if the car has done less than 100,000 klms (60,000 miles). I bought my MK lV 2nd hand, 2 years old, 30,000 miles and the second day of ownership the glass dropped into the door - took it to VW and they booked it in and I paid nothing.

I think it's worth making a fuss as this is a known problem. Might save you some cash.

This said, I agree with Gareth - there are some really good "How To" guides on this site, and I think I'd be tempted to try myself on my passenger side window simply to have peace of mind.

UPDATE....

Put my car in today to have the 2 window regulators fitted, dopey dealers only fitted one to the passenger side where the glass had dropped.

Have to book the car back in now, to much faffing about, story of my life. [:(]

Final bill for one side.... ?130.

Think i'll go buy the repair kits, and keep em in the garage till i take the doors apart for something else like loosing the end of the bolt when i delock the doors[:D], unless they go before hand!!

What comes with the kit??? Is it just the metal retaining plates, or is it the plates and the cable???
