Just a quick update for you southend go'ers. Just spoke to the
garage and they have confirmed its defo the water pump that's
gone. I was also worried as j40hnw pointed out that a 1.8 20v N/A
shouldn't sound like it did outside KFC! I thought there might
have been some engine damage where I was driving hot. Fortunately
this isn't the case! The garage have checked her over and said
its just the water pump... yes, it goes around the 50-60k mark
and can be helped by 'overcooking it' [] LOL! Only problem is
that they are so packed out at the moment, I won't get my car back till
tomorrow or Wednesday! [:(]

Means I gotta hijack my mum's Renault Scenic "The Happy Wagon" Joy. []

Out of interest what should I expect to be paying for a job like
this. They said they need to take the timing belt off.
Its a VAG specialist garage but not a Stealers!

Anyway I thought I'd just say thanks again to all you guys who helped me out - you know who you are [;)][Y]

Next time I might have the means to keep up with you lot without breaking anything LMAO [:D]

Glad you've (nearly) got it sorted. Removing the timing belt sounds a little drastic but I know nothing about replacing a water pump so can't comment. I'll have a look on Elsawin if I can get it installed later.

I'm glad to hear it's nothing major...are you having the cambelt and tentioner changed at the same time?

I had the Cambelt kit put on, on Friday...cost me ?169 for belt, tentioner and rollers. + fitting of ?40

The water pump is driven by a toothed belt, which usually means a timing belt. I asked for my water pump to be replaced when I had my timing belts done last week.

I thought about getting the cambelt done too but I can't really afford
it at the moment - I've still got another 8-9k before it needs doing so
I'll hold on till then - or sell before then [:p]

Shiuming: how much extra was it to get your pump changed?

Cost of the pump. My local knows me well, I said to 'em, look, it's all gonna be in bits anyway, and for the price of a pump vs the cost of fixing the damage if it fails... Just do it! [:D][Y]

Ditto the auxiliary drive belt, they didn't tell me it had to be done but when I said I wanted it done, they said they would inspect and advise, but if I wanted it done then it's just the cost of the belt [Y]

you may as well get the timing belt and pulley done at the same time as they are coming off anyway. basically you'll be paying the same labour charge in 8-9K as you will have just paid !!!!!

Well that's pretty much the price of one of BBT's super-dooper all-metal pumps though, isn't it? I went for a standard VW pump in the end, ?23.00 inc. VAT.

I've asked em for a price to do the belt too. If I can stretch to
it I will but as it will be sometime next year when it needs doing I'll
will probably try my best to hold out till then, with funds being a tad
shy at the mo!

I'm looking to put my car up for sale this/next month anyway!

Do the belt too phil, then you can show it's just been changed and not potentially get knocked down ?300-?500 come time to sell it.

A snapped belt can cause thousands in engine rebuild costs.. think bowdie on here paid ?1400 to have his sorted when the belt went and so did the valves ! For a little extra, it's worth it, if only for the peace of mind !

To do the pump is like a belt change anyway, all the same stuff needs to be stripped.

The belt itself should cost no more than ?20-?30.

It should NOT cost you anymore whatsoever in labour if they are doing ther pump.

If you don't get the belt done, you will in effect be paying twice for the same work.

Saying that if they are a reputable specialist, they should have advised you of the same anyway and I would expect them to change the belt as good working practice.

Hit the nail on the head Colin. [Y]

The Waterpump is run of the timing belt.

You have to remove the belt to do the water pump, and the t/belt should not be put back on.

If your water pump has gone they have to replace the belt anyway, no decent garage should use the same belt.

Don't let them use it again, it will only cost the price of the belt, no addition labour.

Also get them to replace the tensioner and pulleys.

TRUST me it's woth the extra to get them done as well, if the tensioner or pulley goes it will have the same effect as if the belt were to go, then your looking at a new top end rebuild.

Good luck mate, if you need anymore help send us a PM

All the best

Dan

Hi ya mate .....glad to hear no damage was done and its a case of a water pump

like the others say for the price of a new belt and tensioner might aswell get it done now ...just incase it does snap

ive been told not to re-use belts once they have been taken off .......and i know ya said you dont need one till another 8k .....me personlay mate would get it done now ....

rather than incure the same sort of labour charge in a few months would be like paying out for the same labour cost over again

Have they given ya a price yet

Cheers guys, I spoke to the guy there (Rich) this morning - hes said he
should be able to get around to working on my car today. He
agrees totally about doing the belt, tensioner and pullys [Y]
Should have a price by 11am (ish).

Heh, told him that I was gonna be selling in a month or two and he was
like "What...Why the hell would you wanna do that?!?!" LOL I told him I
wanted a 1.8T and he said "aaaah, fair enough then!! [Y][Y]" [:p]

Look at it this way. You've got,

Lowered suspension,
Bodykit,
Modified bonnet and grille,
Huuuge wheels,
and probably loads more.

How much did all that cost? If it's under ?2k I'll be stunned.

And now, while the car is in bits anyway, you are umming and erring about changing the timing belt, which will cost you under ?100 for the parts? Mad, I say.

I have smaller versions of those alloys (18's), lowered and those front
lights, thats it [Y] That and some interior bits probably total
around ?800 ish [:D]

Glad you got home safely mate and your getting your car sorted!

I had a new belt in my tdi and when I was having some work done round that area, my mechanic was like "you know I'm not letting you drive that with that belt don't you"

It's always best getting a new one![Y]
