Hi all,

Going on a thread currently active here on uk-mkiv, I must admit, the quality of the paintwork indoors on the show cars at UD was poor! No names or fingers pointed, but, a few really didn't deserve their place inside (...wonder if I can get my Avant in next year? [:DD] )

I would have loved to have seen the following car underneath the harsh exhibition lights:

Volkswagen Golf mkiv - 'Ultimate Dubs' 2011 show prep

The Golf was dropped off on the Tuesday afternoon and collected Friday in readiness for Sundays Ultimate Dubs show in Telford.

My plan? A wheels-off & Major Paint Correction Detail. (I think it's fair to say at this point that this one could never be 100%. 106k miles of daily use has taken its tole!)

Car was ridded in deep scratches and swirls. It's going to be a tough one…

First up, wheels off, arches scrubbed , brake assembly cleaned and rims protected.

Resprayed areas: both bumpers, B-pillar and the boot lid.. The rest of the car is original VW paint and has suffered quite badly recently from regular trips to the local handwash station.

After messing around with various polish/pad combinations, it was clear this wasn't going to be easy. As the defects were as bad as they were and with the paint being as hard as nails, I had to go aggressive. Settled with a Lake Country wool pad, FastCut+ and a blob of Ultrafina.

Most areas requiring 2-3 hits with wool to deliver the results I was after. Polished with Menz 85RD 3.02 on a yellow polishing pad and then later refined with 3M Ultrafina on a blue finishing pad.

All four wheel arches suffered in one way or another - slightly scabby so had to take care when machining.

The finish around the arches wasn't perfect; it was either this, or, risk catching the affected area with the machine pad and making things 10x worse.

O/S front wing complete.

Getting inside the door handle was a little tricky; obviously a machine pad wouldn't fit in here so it was polished by hand.

So far, we're pushing for 95% defect correction. I was lucky that the original paint had healthy thickness readings. However, some marks were just too deep and had to remain behind.

B-pillars 50/50:

Although challenging at the time, looking back, I thoroughly enjoyed transforming this one!

Total worktime was ~29 hours over the 4 days.

Thanks for reading,

Hamidi, you need to be so sacked from driving that car - you really did put Jim through misery! [:p]

Amazing work as usual though from Jim! [Y]

Awesome work,i especially like how well you managed to correct the rear arches while not letting the pad rip off more paint[Y]

How open are you to answering questions for rotary advise?

this is the one thing that i was MOST looking forward to in 2011! i was getting my flame suit of when i drove up to Jims on tuesday for the bad paint work i had but my gosh i've never seen a worse car than mine in those pics! i was truly ashamed to admit to Jim that i did take it to the local car washes, i felt like a little a nursery kid infront of the teacher when i poured paint in to the class fish bowl [:$] [surrender]

Jim kept me up to date every night with how it went that day, mostly a mouthful of mishmashed non-understandable swearing whilst he text me [:|] lol

i could have gone to any of the dozen of detailers in this part of the country but i've been watching Jims work for about a year on various forums and have just loved the thought and time put in to it all. 110% effort!

i would like to say that i am A VERY HAPPY customer, and i'd definately recommend anyone else thinking about it to go see him (maybe even sort out a group buy with him?) [;)]

PS: check you out Jim! [:p]

definitely lee, definitely! was a proud owner all over again! you can see that driving daily (and driving daily low) has put the car through the limits with burnt arches and bust shocks and what not, i was very much up to my neck with it and hated it through the winter! hence i took it to the local car wash, which i happened to live opposite on the same street!

Good work, Jim. Whoever owns that needs shooting
. Local handwash station...oh my days
excuse me sir, i got laughed at by people nearly every weekend when i washed my car the proper way when the hand wash place is across the road, they used to wacth me do my stuff and shake their heads. but come winter i gave in and took the car to them.

horrible mistake and never again!

wow, you're not too far from me either

how much would a sesh like this cost?
Fiz, DO IT!

[facepalm] <----- BIGGEST FACEPALM!

quick tip to those reading. never use a bonnet bra after a detail. ESPECIALLY if its got dust on the car and not taped up underneath it!

Haha, thats a brilliant pic! Adam came in handy throughout the detail to be fair, as he was around finishing a few areas on his own car, he was able to pick up the camera every now and again..

Thanks for the kind words buddy. Good to meet you.

Look forward to seeing some of your own pics next time the sun shines! (just try and avoid photographing the bonnet now you've marred it with the bra! ;) )

Any questions RE your maintenance etc feel free to fire over an email

Cheers

(PS, is dele selling that gearstick? [:D] )
