Picked up a 4Motion this week (2002/02, 48k miles) and have discovered some interesting history.

The service book was stamped by a VW dealer in Rotterdam but no dates or details, so I contacted them to try and fill in the missing bits of the picture from the car's early life.

Within a few hours I had an email back from their service department, including the full build sheet spec for the car - great service ! They confirmed the car was first sold by them with a UK build spec.

I am now the 8th owner of the car so am delighted to be able to add this info to the car's history.

I'm really pleased to be into a 4Motion again - and whilst it needs some renewing of parts this will be done by a local specialist over the next few months.

Will post up some decent pics tomorrow [Y]

Gave the 4Mo a quick wash and fitted the new centre caps. They seem to look OK.

I really like the paint colour on this car, it's the blue-charcoal pearlescent and has a lovely fleck when you catch it at the right angle.

What the car really needs now is some paint correction for a few scratches/chips/imperfections and a proper detail

Picked up a replacement OEM cat-back exhaust with 31k miles on the clock (instead of my current 48k) with brand new OEM fixing sleeve and a VW specialist will be fixing the immediate list of things next week - temp sensor, power steering pipe plus a proper detailed checkover.

So far so good [Y]

You are the 8th owner with 48k on the clock
yep - with all the bills, owners and stamps checking out perfectly. 4 of the owners only kept the car 6 months each.

The interior, engine bay/trim, pedals, door seals, windows and other tell-tale signs all look like a 30-40k car. It needs some tidying up and definitely new brakes and a few suspension bits, but it's been sitting around and not used regularly so no surprise a few of the chassis bits need a refresh.

The seller was really struggling to trade the car in with VW due to the number of previous owners but sometimes you have to take a chance at a certain price point when buying privately. I'm not bothered at all by the number of owners as this is my second car and is a bit of a project to get it to top condition again.

only raced 4 times at le Mans :)

Joking aside..nice colour, any plans?
:)

Yes, the plan is to get it into top condition and own as a weekend car. It's not that flashy, and I've done the whole Impreza, R32, M3 thing etc - what I want is a decent all-weather car and to have something to work on at home etc.

I've got so bored with my 330d then current 730d and lots of motorway miles and wanted something with a manual gearbox - this ticks all the boxes for me and is fairly cost-effective compared to what I've thrown away on cars in the past.

I may end up with a Milltek etc but first the mechanicals need to be renewed in stages then we'll see about tweaking it.

whats the interesting history? couldn't use the link as you need to be a member.

other than that its a nice looking car and why would number of owners make any difference? it just shows that people have underestimated the running costs of a 4WD v6 car.

It's the build sheet with all codes for the car when new - the car was sold by a Dutch VW dealer which actually attracted me to the car - for some reason gives it a bit of character.

Sorry about the link, it was the only place I could upload a zip file to provide a link.

It was really refreshing to have the Rotterdam dealer be really helpful, by providing the missing info from the paperwork and filling in the gap for what happened to the car before 2003 .....

A belated welcome to the forum rs32.

The car is a lovely example and in a fairly rare colour for a 4mo. Bit of a change to the 7 series. I guess that you'll be able to park the Golf into the tiniest of parking spaces without thinking about it!

Lovely looking 4mo there - exactly what I'd like as a daily driver

Great to hear some good service from VW, even if it is an overseas dealer!

All the best with the car - look forward to any future updates [Y]

Got a bargain on EBay for a replacement OEM cat-back exhaust - had it fitted today and looks great.

(rear valance also being replaced due to historical damage)

Also got a replacement power steering pipe (mine has a slight leak), Bosch MAF and replacement gas struts for the hatchback from a local breaker for very reasonable money.

The only slight negative today was confirming the sump has taken a whack and been welded with a slight residual oil issue - so this will be replaced to stop me worrying about the oil falling out and knackering the engine.

Unfortunately I cannot advertise on this site yet but I have my original OEM cat-back system available, it's not perfect but it has been inspected by a local garage and deemed fit for an MOT so happy to sell for a fair price. There is a dent in the rear silencer but no holes and ideal for MOT or going back to standard when selling a car.

Mine is a 2002 BDE 4-motion - the exhaust has done approx 48k miles, not sure whether it suits the other 4Mo engine types. PM if interested - can send pics if required [Y]

They proably didn't realise what a guzzler the V6 is compared to a diesel or even a 4 cylinder petrol.[cry]

I wouldn't be too concerned about the number of owners either in view of the condition.

Their loss - your gain.[<)]

Put some R32 anti roll bars on it to get rid of some of the body roll....and a blue haldex controller [H]

Peace and welcome!

8 owners or not, I personally think it is a great buy. I'm sure with a bit of tidying up it will be a real minter - you'll probably find people second-guessing the number of owners without telling them in the first place!
