Hi Guys

Im new here, firstly i'd like to say hi to all. Im new owner of VW Golf Mk4 V6 4Motion 2002.

I notice a rather strong fuel smell seemingly when im idle after running the car on a journey and sometimes on startup before moving off? is this common? I had a small engine (1.6 Saxo) before this huge and beastly V6 so they may all smell like this lol. Any advice you guys can give me on the 4Mo on perhaps common things I can look out for whilst its still under warranty I would be hugely in your debt ;) Hope to have a gud friendship and help each other out in turn im sure in time to come.

Happy Christmas to all

Tony :p

welcome mate!

try checking the fuel filter, its located under the car in front of the driver side rear wheel arch!

mine sprung a leak once and stunk of petrol! if u start the car up and then look underneath u might see it dripping!
ok I will look at that, also there is a fuel delivery pump under the rear seats?? is that worth a check?

There seems to be a whining noise coming from the rear of the car when driving along. It is barely noticeable at speeds up to 55-60Mph, then it seems to get louder over 75-80Mph and then goes away over 100-110Mph. Ive not have 4WD before and Im guessing its the Diff/Drive shafts natural noise ? Can you 4Mo Drivers post here on your driving noises. I get road nosie a tiny bit through the 19" Wheels but thats defo normal.

THis is an awesome forum, thank you in anticipation for your help all :)

Tony
not sure on the fuel pump mate.

i get a slight whining from the dif at similar speeds to you. i wouldnt worry about it mate!

oh and get some pics up lol
another noise u might notice is a slight clattering noise when you lift off the throttle.

this will be the drivetrain, apparently normal!
Hi tom

Sure m8 ill get some pics up asap.

Please can you elaborate a bit on the noise you get pls m8? does it seem to come from the rear of your 4mo? does it increase with engine RPM? and is it noticeable under say 60Mph?

Also does the VW Golf Mk4 V6 4Motion have a timing "chain" or "belt" as i noticed u put drivechain but some1 else says belt ?? Pls confirm tom if u know buddy, ty for replies thus far ;)

I post u pics soon bud hehe
Also i worked out the MPG / cost aspect of my standard v6 4mo

Im averaging 25 MPG between urban and 6th gear motorway crusing and here is the math i came up with, plz correct me if im totally wrong here guys:

25 MPG, so 4.5 Ltr / Gallon approx

So 5.5 Miles per litre ?

10 Litres = 55 Miles costing £12.20

45 Litres = 247.5 Miles costing £54.90

60 Litres = 330 Miles costing 73.20 equal to 0.22p per mile

Based on £1.22 per litre average UK price

^ That isnt too bad for the engine / performance these things produce.

The MPG rises to mid 40's - 50's MPG in 5th or 6th around the town lol but drops to unreadable (--- on the gauge when I go for it) sometimes when accelarating. Can u plz post your readings so I can compare

I wonder if the smell could be rich exhaust fumes coming through the floor of the car? its when I park up after a good run when I notice it mostly ? Do any of you experience this kind of smell in the cabin of the car ? It may be normal but im thinking not?

Sorry to go on, I just have som much to ask you all its unreal atm :) just getting to know her haha ;)

Personally if its only after a good run, i dont see anything to worry about. If its fuel pump i have one from my V6 im not using, the V6 isnt a bad engine my friend had one for years an no serious problems i remember him change the coolant temp sensor i fitted it cost £11 but i know S3/TT/4 Mo getting the differential oil change is a must these need this regular oil change from what VW recommend.
the whining noise is most noticable around 60mph in 5th and 6th otherwise u can barely hear it.

drivetrain clattering noise as in propshaft/gearbox etc!

however the 4mo run a timing chain not a belt!

when talking about mpg on long runs on the motorway 30mpg

b roads 27-28

town 20-22

rough estimates but u get the idea

as for the smell, mine does smell quite strong when first started but it goes once the cats are warm!

Ill take the fuel pump if ya want to sell been lookin for one 4 ages !

How much deliverded to Worcester??
As for the diff noise mine had the same and i changed the haldex oil and filter in the rear diff and bingo like a new one !

Do you have any record of this being changed if not DO IT NOW!!

I got the oil and filter offa ebay £39.99 and brought the spanner (my spanner is now on ebay!) from gsf motor factors and changed it on car ramps its pretty easy but the oil that came was black and there was hardly any oil that came out. I think that alot of garges seem to miss this oil change out !
^^^ I agree with the above, even if your unsure an previous owner says its been done just get it done piece of mind to be honest. Its critical getting it done on the haldex an is a big job to replace it lots of things off. While on ramp might aswel drop gear oil and motor oil too.
Yip! I had this problem and noticed that one of the hoses at the Carbon Filter had came off slightly (was not noticeable by looking I sniffed the engine bay untill I found the sorce of the smell...no one was about [:-*]), pushed it back in and been fine since, I had the petrol smell when stationary and it was quite bad, Traffic lights, Junctions ect. Got my Haldex done for £59.99 at a VW specialist not far from me, think its every 40,000 but not sure, hope you get it sorted mate.
hi tony had the same smell on mine it was the fuel filter local garage fitted new one £26.00 job done
hi buddys anyone fitted a evoms intake on a 4 motion , was it worth it ? thanks bells
Don't go buy a intake, a glorified intake are useless 0/2bhp gains and the factory system is ok so why change something that works maybe a new panel filter or a better one would be cheaper option so it can breath better over stock look for green stuff an not one with oil residue like K&N rubbish, spend the money on a decent map.
hi do you think the remaps work ok with 95 ron fule , i dont want to have to search out 98 every time i fill up
People use all octane fuels on remaps an not a problem although i think yours will be normal pump gas, i dont think alot of people map to higher octane fuels not on a stage 1, its for mainly torque an flat spots which will increase power a little on a V6 proberly around 25-30bhp.
