Just found out a Golf GTI on the road price in the US is $22,620!

This includes xenons/headlamp wash, in dash 6-CD changer and power operated seats, 17" alloys plus all the standard stuff we get here with the exception of climate control (just has manual a/c as standard).

Anyone care to covert the above to GBP (I think we are in for a shock)?

However it doesn't include rain sensitive wipers, auto-headlights and dimming rear-view mirror.
For ?12,000 vs ?20,000, who cares though? How about a BMW M3 for
?28,000, or a MKIV R32 for ?16,000 (which they complained was crazy
expensive and would never sell LOL!). The arguments are complicated,
but for whatever reason, it really does feel like we get a ridiculously
raw deal.

Just to make one or two corrections & updates:

The US spec GTI comes with the following options included:

Metallic paint at no cost

Armrest

In dash 6-CD changer

Hi-line computer

Cruise control

Daytime running lights

Multi function steering wheel

Auto dipping rear view mirror (internal)

Xenons plus headlamp wash

It does not have the following:

Auto wipers

Climatronic (has ordinary a/c)

My earlier remark about power seats was wrong (they are 8-way manually adjustable).

All this for ?12k on the road (before any discount)!!!! We are well and truly ripped off here.

The US GTI rides a bit higher than ours though, to comply with some law about bumper or headlight height (I can't remember which).
Still, we are totally ripped off in this country.

That's a strange one considering how many slammed (or raised) trucks and cars you see over there.

This thread gets repeated month after month, and nobody has imported an MKV back. It is too expensive to do.

The ride height is higher over in the US to get a better score on the side impact saftey ratings, due to the number of SUV's on the roads.

Only because of the stupidity of it all - paying import duties to bring
it back into the EU. Shipping is about ?1000 tops, but you will have to
pay import duty on it and VAT. You might be able to claim back the US
taxes, but I would guess the end figure would be somwhere around
?16,000. That leaves you with a LHD Golf which needs SVA approval and
that you will have difficulty selling...for ?4k, people probably won't
bother.

The part that makes no sense is the list price differential. The car
has a 'fixed' cost; both US and UK models are made in a factory in
Germany. You then add destination costs, which MUST be higher for a US
dealership (the Atlantic, import duties, etc) which will be more than a
car shipped across from Germany and kept within the EU. State and
Federal taxes are roughly equivelant to VAT, and dealerships in both
countries have have their mark up.

I suspect volumes are much higher and margins lower in the US, but the
fact remains, at ?12k that car makes VW a profit. VW charge ?20k in the
UK because comeptition is lower (No ?10k Mustangs to lure Joe Public
away from) and VW can. They all do it...?27,000 BMW M3 anyone?
