I have had a 1.6FSI for the past 18 months and with a new job i have decided to waste some money on a new car.

After test driving a 350z it looks like insurance is not even going to be remotely possible. :(

Has anyone upgraded from a MKV up to a MKV GTI? Will i get bored too quick or what?

So my shortlist of insurable cars is :

Golf GTI

A3 3.2

A4 3.2

Otherwise the S3 might be nice if its out within the next 3-4 months i could wait!

I say go test drive them. Judging by what the press has said about the MkV GTI and also by people's opinions here, the GTI seems to be one of the best real world cars in the ermmmm actual world.

Just go and drive one mate. You will not be disappointed. A certain
smile on your face too and from work if you do decide to get one! And
the priceless feature that comes as standard is the look on BMW
driver's faces as you cut them up and fly past them (not that I would
do such a thing!).

Well ive booked a test drive for Monday, i just know the novelty factor
of it being a GTI will wear of pretty quick, because at the end of the
day its the same cabin, and same car, albeit alot faster and better to
drive!

Im test driving the A3 3.2 Quattro as well, sure the S3 will be nice
but it would probably just be cosmetic differences - cant see it being
much faster?

What i would REALLY like is a 2 door A4 (not cabrio!), something on par
with a bmw 330 or alfa GT, not sure thats happening any time soon
though!

I looked at all these cars before choosing the GTI.

A3 3.2 - fast, comfortable, ride quality poor, very jiggly if that is such a word, nice engine, but for my use I'd spend way too much on furl for the upside, Depreciation is a major issue with the 3.2 too, dealers love selling them new, and hate them at trade in, often taking ages for them to shift on. expect 23-24mpg or less. that's whay kills secondhand value. Check audisport.net for details on shock absorber knocking noises and expected second hand values on the 3.2. drive a 3.2 out the showroom and it goes from being a 25k plus car to 18 max instantly. even private sale.

A4 3.2 - well it was the A4 3.0 cab I drove, bit like a barge, wallowed around in comparison, not a sporty drive. Really a motorway car. S4 and RS4 are i expect much better, but not in this price range.

GTI - best compromise, comfortable, sporty but firm ride, great seats ( better than audi), performance when needed 40mpg when not. doesn't have the badge image but suspension etc all much better than A3. 20K car driven off the forecourt, worth 18 probably via private sale. Interior is not as good as the audi, but it's not bad, and I prefer the grey rather than black interior as it just looks brighter and doesn't show the dust.

If you want badge snobbery over the better car, chose the audi, if you want the better all round car.......

oh and S3 is apparently now planned for Nov 2006.

Wow thanks for the nice summary :)

Im slowly starting to think the GTI is the car - i still really love
the look of my car, just the 1.6 and little alloys doesnt do it justice!

Have you thought about the A3 2.0T FSI?

I'm going to be looking at one of these and a GTI before the end of the year, with the same reservations about sitting in the same (mk5) car?

Choose it in S-Line and you'll get either DSG or quattro & 18s as standard, and you should be able to wangle ?1k discount. Comesa in not much dearer than a GTI with 18s and DSG.

Havent driven either yet as i know i wont be able to wait to change if i do!

Yeah im definately seriously considering the A3 over the Golf - better
build quality and at the end of the day its a totally different car, so
i wont get bored too quick.

I also like the idea of having 4wd, especially when you have got alot of power on tap!

Anyway we shall see, test drive for the GTI is booked for tommorow!

Same here, I too changed from an A3 and although the build quality is better I have never looked back and the ride on the GTi is far superior, test drive both but I bet you go for the GTi [;)]

also , bear in mind that 99% of the mechanical components are the same, the light grey in the gti can make some people think it's cheaper, black somehow makes the car look more expensive.

I found thinkgs like the headlight switch on the audi to be quite cheap feeling too, so suspect ultimate quality isn't too different, things like seat comfort etc are way better in the gti. I can understand someone buying the audi for perceived quality, given issues of knocking shocks, ride quality etc, i'm not convinced it's better, just different.

Anyway the test drive was really good!

The salesman took me along some really nice clear country roads and
told me to open it up! Several times i glanced down at the speedo and i
was getting on for 80mph!!! Its deceptively fast, i love the turbo, it
seems to really move no matter what gear your in!

Overall i think im sold! Even though the interior is the same as my
1.6, the fact its a GTI will make all the difference. I think it will
take some time to get bored of that drive!

The dealer said they would give me ?10k for my 1.6SE FSI with 2Zone and
Foglights. It was registered in May04 and has 7800 miles on it. What
you recon?

I would want to get GTI in Met-Black, with Leather and the 18 Alloys.
Only problem i got is the dealer was mentioning figures of 6 months
from order to delivery. I really cant be doing that, so im gonna have
to look for stock cars or fairly new second handers.

That is not enough IMO. What did it cost new, ~?16k?

Is there any discount on the GTI?

PM user "Wish" he has a black GTI on 18" for sale (few other extras like Xenons too). No leather, but at least you could get the car now.

Yeah, and that was with the discount through drivethedeal.co.uk

It might be worth trying to sell it privately?
