Hi all,

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GATES-POWERGRIP-TIMING-BELT-KIT-AND-WATER-PUMP-VW-GOLF-1-9-GT-GTi-TDi-2-0-TDi-/251632796704?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&fits=Model%3AGolf%7CPlat_Gen%3AMK+IV&hash=item3a967bc420#vi-ilComp

Would this kit fit my car? It's a 2001 GT TDI 130 ASZ.

TPS are charging a lot more money for these same parts.

I've heard of Gates stuff before in other posts so I am assuming it's decent enough.

Thanks

Steve

Thanks. I've emailed my reg number across tot he seller as they said it's best to check.
Yep, last thing you want to do is strip it down only to find you have the wrong tensioner.
Aren't you running the DSD hot cam? If you are it would be sensible to check how much timing advance you are running before starting to make sure your tune is still spot on after the new belt is fitted

Yes, that's right. The services of Mr Singh are being requested. he's seen my spec and I've sent him an email asking if this kit is suitable.

I asked the above to VAGTECH in MK as I was conscious of the timing too and they said it wouldn't make any difference as they use the locking tools as wouldn't change the timing from what it currently is. I don't know enough to check if that is correct though.
Ahh, if Bobby is on the case you will be fine. The problem is the pulley can still slip a little even with a locking kit, with the hot cams and a little timing advance you can easily get valves hitting pistons :( especially that it is an interference fit!

Thanks. I'm sure Bobby will be fine. He's going to look at my cars set up anyway as I do want to tone down the smoke a little and stop the black vapour leak form the IC pipe too. A little tweak and putting it down to around 270bhp should reduce the smoke quite a bit.
Got my kit from ECP and confirmed the part fitted my chassis all ok. I went with the INA kit which Bobby recommended.

Got my de-ionised water ready too so I can buy the coolant from VW tomorrow hopefully.

Would you guys recommend a new thermostat too or leave it alone if it's working fine?
If it isn't broken don't fix it ;)
did he recommend the INA kit over the gates i need to do mine shortly, also i would leave the thermostat if it's not giving you a problem , but change the water pump.
Cheers guys.

Yep, Bobby said the INA kit from ECP is fine.

I got the kit including the water pump.

Thermostat is performing ok and sits at 90 so will leave it alone.
Does anyone know where I can get a metal impeller water pump from?

Thanks
I would just use the VW plastic impeller pump. At least you know the bearings will last well. Just changed mine after 4 years...still looks brand new. If you use the correct coolant, which I know you are, then it will be fine.
Bobby Singh fitted my KWP water pump.

Decent coolant used already so should be fine for another 5 years.

Bought it from EuroCarParts.

They sold a water pump from a brand called circcolli I think it was. All metal including impeller but it was poorly made and the material looked brittle and looked really poorly made against the KWP model.

The reputation of the OEM plastic impeller pumps seems to have survived long after they were newly introduced (in the Golf 4 era I understand) and the problem traced and resolved with a different plastic material.

Instances of plastic pump impeller failures on later and current cars seem very rare nowadays

+1 nothing wrong with a decent make of water pump with a plastic impeller.
Totally agree in regards of the crappy ECP Circoli branded pumps.
I fitted one to my mk3 TDI and the bearing was shot within 4 months or so!
