Rattling coming from the clutch, flywheel maybe even gear box. All gears engage and work fine. Traveling down hill using the gearbox and engine breaking effect to hold/slow the car and resting my foot on the clutch ican feel the vibration through the pedal, sort of a clutch relase bearing breaking up type noise/feel.[]
With my head under the bonnet i blip the throtle and there is a rattle that sounds like a hard, dense metal(steel for example)against a softer metal (Ali say).
Has anyone had this? new clutch? new bearing? new flywheel?[?]
well to it out and about saturday, threw caution to the wind, cained seven bells out of her and coming off a r'bout acelerating hard in second, the wheels let out a rubbery shreik and the ratlling was not there on the next gear shift. Seems to have gone although i think it could be the quiet before the storm!
The rattle is back, albeit slight and only on startup. For VW have such Self Humiliationary gearbox's there isnt a lot of action on this part of the forum....
october and all is quiet. a little vibration through the pedal. Possibly one onf the weights on the dual mass flywheel? Possibly fingers breaking off the pressure plate, possibly a flux in the force....all will be revealed in time..
I guess unless its a chip, turbo upgrade or general frotage about how shiney things are things are not as interesting. I fairness the gearbox is v. complex and i dont think there are too many gb speacialists on the site.
I've been having similar problems, but worse. As I accelerate away the car makes a rumbling sound and vibrates throughout the car. Does anyone know if this sounds like the dual mass flywheel or what it could be? Any help much appreciated. Ive been quoted 236+vat for the flywheel, 90 for the clutch and 150-200 for fitting. I'm reluctant to get the work done spending 600quid in case it turns out being something else. Thanx

going to pop along to a vag specailist this morning and hopefully leave the car there while they confirm and fix the problem! after reading many of the threads on here, im not convinced my gearbox is broke (despite the diagnosis from the other garage!)
will let you know how i get on, but im thinking over the next few days ill be having a new dual mass flywheel fitted!
best of luck dude. I beleive it to be either the fingers on the pressure plate snapping off or the dual mass breaking up. clatter noise has gone (although threatens now and then!) but vibrations are increasing through the cabin (although the vibs arent bad!)
im getting this also it rattels untill i put my foot on the clutch! i just had my clutch replaced a few months back along with a light weight single mass flywheel! so i dont think it could be that so im thinking gearbox!!! how much does a gearbox cost to buy? does any1 know?
Now i've had my golf for over a year now and just after i purchased it
i noticed a noise similar to your one, a rattle coming from the gearbox.
This was only heard at idle and was quite loud at times, and also a
vibration could be felt through the clutch pedal but otherwise the car
was running pewrfectly with 114k on the clock. The other thing was that
if the clutch pedal was depressed a couple of times the noise
dissapeared and also the vibration through the clutch pedal.
I took it to a vw specialist and for my mot and asked about the noise.
He had his steathoscope out and said it may be the main shaft bearings
in the gearbox($$$$$), hmmmm...... When i went to pick my car up from the mot and
i let the owner of the garage have a look and a feel of the clutch and
he says it could be one of the fingers on the clutch plate out of line
causing the thrust bearing to be rattled.
He then said it was nothing to worry about. That was just under a year ago and the noise is still the same.

apparently a common fault. most people ditch the dual mass flywheel when replacing and upgrade the cluth and flywheel. Thats what i did and only cost ?500, which while not cheap, was miles cheaper than vw was for a replacement dual mass!

So what was actually broken? Mine is starting to vibrate more and more (altough in truth it is a minor vibration, not like an out of balance wheel at 80mph, more the wifes rabbit on its lowest setting).
Did you go new or secondhand flywheel? V5, VR6 or G60? (or are these the same)
I am hoping to nurse mine into the new year and then change it. Might even try it myself, looks like there is plenty of room that side of the engine to work.
not sure what was actually broken!...something was far wrong, mines didnt only vibrate, but you could hear grinding as you revved the car. They needed to use an angle grider to cut my flywheel off as it had moved not allowing them to get into the bolts to remove! yours isnt obviously in quite as bad nick
Cant really comment re the difference between vr6/v5 and g60 differences, but the prices seem to be about the same and the price i stated was for new flywheel and uprated clutch.
