just got back from lunch

and to cut a long story short as this is the second fliping time of typing the message (bullpoo poo work PC)[}:)]

Rattling coming from the clutch, flywheel maybe even gear box. All gears engage and work fine. Traveling down hill using the gearbox and engine breaking effect to hold/slow the car and resting my foot on the clutch ican feel the vibration through the pedal, sort of a clutch relase bearing breaking up type noise/feel.[:(]

With my head under the bonnet i blip the throtle and there is a rattle that sounds like a hard, dense metal(steel for example)against a softer metal (Ali say).

Has anyone had this? new clutch? new bearing? new flywheel?[?]

This car is raping my savings...[:(]

Help!!!!

well to it out and about saturday, threw caution to the wind, cained seven bells out of her and coming off a r'bout acelerating hard in second, the wheels let out a rubbery shreik and the ratlling was not there on the next gear shift. Seems to have gone although i think it could be the quiet before the storm!

october and all is quiet. a little vibration through the pedal. Possibly one onf the weights on the dual mass flywheel? Possibly fingers breaking off the pressure plate, possibly a flux in the force....all will be revealed in time..

who said that?

I guess unless its a chip, turbo upgrade or general frotage about how shiney things are things are not as interesting. I fairness the gearbox is v. complex and i dont think there are too many gb speacialists on the site.

Still i like to keep my self up to date!!

Well here's one - Mind you, I know a bit more about 5/6 speed sequential dog boxes than this road car rubbish!

I've been having similar problems, but worse. As I accelerate away the car makes a rumbling sound and vibrates throughout the car. Does anyone know if this sounds like the dual mass flywheel or what it could be? Any help much appreciated. Ive been quoted 236+vat for the flywheel, 90 for the clutch and 150-200 for fitting. I'm reluctant to get the work done spending 600quid in case it turns out being something else. Thanx

going to pop along to a vag specailist this morning and hopefully leave the car there while they confirm and fix the problem! after reading many of the threads on here, im not convinced my gearbox is broke (despite the diagnosis from the other garage!)

will let you know how i get on, but im thinking over the next few days ill be having a new dual mass flywheel fitted!

thankss for your info!

best of luck dude.  I beleive it to be either the fingers on the pressure plate snapping off or the dual mass breaking up.  clatter noise has gone (although threatens now and then!) but vibrations are increasing through the cabin (although the vibs arent bad!)

Hmmm interesting thread....

Now i've had my golf for over a year now and just after i purchased it
i noticed a noise similar to your one, a rattle coming from the gearbox.

This was only heard at idle and was quite loud at times, and also a
vibration could be felt through the clutch pedal but otherwise the car
was running pewrfectly with 114k on the clock. The other thing was that
if the clutch pedal was depressed a couple of times the noise
dissapeared and also the vibration through the clutch pedal.

I took it to a vw specialist and for my mot and asked about the noise.
He had his steathoscope out and said it may be the main shaft bearings
in the gearbox($$$$$), hmmmm...... When i went to pick my car up from the mot and
i let the owner of the garage have a look and a feel of the clutch and
he says it could be one of the fingers on the clutch plate out of line
causing the thrust bearing to be rattled.

He then said it was nothing to worry about. That was just under a year ago and the noise is still the same.

apparently a common fault. most people ditch the dual mass flywheel when replacing and upgrade the cluth and flywheel. Thats what i did and only cost ?500, which while not cheap, was miles cheaper than vw was for a replacement dual mass!
