Am I nuts? Just before you answer....

I'm looking at buying a house soon, so need to cut the outgoings and
free up some cash. At the moment I figure theres about ?13k stacked up
in the Anniversary, which, as the months go by, is slowly dwindling
away - and I'm not even using it much (probably 5k per year). The
jalpoy is the work horse doing about 15k per year, but shes not getting
any younger and I can see some large bills coming soon.

So, I've been doing some thinking and come to the conlusion that maybe
I should just look at getting shut of both cars and invest in something
cheaper and more focused to what I need- aka the all rounder. Top of my
list would be a Bora TDI, either a 115, 130 or 150 sport. Now the
budget I have in mind is around 5-6k, maybe cheaper if I can find one.
High milers aren't a concern as, as noted in another topic, it can be
an indiciation that they've been looked after and at least have most of
their niggles out the way.

Question is are 115, 130 or 150 Sport's available for that kind of money?

And what do you think a fair price for the Anniversary would be?
Bearing in mind its an 02 plate with 20k on the clock and is *mint*. I
would be selling her as standard as well, thats with the original
unmarked burnished RC's that have been in storage since buying the car.
I'd want her going to a good home after the work I've put in on the car!

Any help/comments/views would be appreciated [:)]

Good choice of car to go to [;)] I picked up my Bora Sport 115pd 4-5 months back , 114k on the clock, 4k all in (Check the pictures, link in my sig...Obv. ive done the mods) It took me ages to find one that cheap and in this condition, mainly looking on Auto trader + Ebay. but roughly , say if you wanted a popular colour (silver, blue, black) with say 70k on it tops you`d have no trouble for one with top spec, 51 reg maybe?...6k easy! Insurance wise, the 115 is about 2 groups lower iirc, so im happy with mine and just nail a tuning box on it. If insurance isnt a problem then i guess it`d be common sense to get the 150bhp.

Mwahahahahahaha turning to the Bora darkside [:)]

2000 130s start at about ?4.5k, but IMO most will be 110/115s until you get to about ?5.5k. 130/150 Sports will be around ?6k+ and newer, about 51 plate on I think? It may be of interest that petrol ones are even cheaper....a quick browse on Autotrader found three 2001-2003 1.8T Boras for under ?5k. SE or Sport is the way to go but very little difference between the two, you would be suprised (and certainly nothing a few choice mods wouldn't sort). Otherwise the same MK4 stuff you know inside out really.

Hundreds about, modded they look mint, subtle enough not to get robbed at the Trafford Centre...perfect choice! Remember to stop about 7 inches earlier when reversing in future.

It was your post that got me thinking about the whole thing a wee bit
more seriously [;)] At the moment I'm paying (collectively) about ?1050
to insure both cars, so any reduction in that will be a bonus. Of
course out and out power isn't a major factor here, so performance and
tuning will be taking a back burner if a decently priced 115 or 130
comes to my attention.

Mark, why not chop the Rover in for something similar, another Jalopy and keep the anni?

How long did you plan on keeping the anni when you picked it up?

Hey I've been driving a barge for the last year, if anything the Bora should be shorter. [:D]

Did plan on three years but after thinking about how much money would
be lost in that time I thought its money that could be invested
elsewhere i.e. an ISA or other investment fund.

Yep it was your post! Thanks for the link, see what you mean about the interior. I'd rather hang fire for black interior though.

Plan of attack btw is to sell the Anniversary, use the Rover until I
find a Bora then sell the Rover. At least that way I have a set of
wheels to keep me going, and I've got the majority of my money sitting
in the bank not slowly dwindling away.

I've had the Rover for just over a year now. Owes me nothing and it
will keep going for a while longer (not too long mind!). It's a decent
car considering it cost me ?800. No point replacing Jalopy short term
or keeping the Anniversary any longer than I have to realistically
speaking.

And yours is a good looking example of a Bora, especially considering
the miles on her - Only wish I could pick up a bargain like that when
the time comes [Y]

Mark, I think you are doing the right thing.... running two cars no
matter how reasonable is a very expensive hobby.... having something
like an older elise or 911 is great as they dont really deperciate.

Selling the anni now would be a very sensible thing to do as when the
30th annis come out prices will plummet... look at R32 prices!!!

Howabout the best of both worlds from your R32 days howabout an Audi A3 pd130 quattro...

its a bit more but they come with 3-5 doors a decent chassis that is
cheaply modded and a tastefull Recaro interior (that is unbadged) and
they are very very rare so command top whack and dont depreciate as
there is a shortage of 4wd diesel htchbacks on the market.

Dont rule out the bora its still great Idea its just that after
the R and the Anni you may feel like going downmarket wehereas if you
drive a different marque it wont quite feel the same

this one is alot but there are a few out there for 6-8 k...

I am checking out the big auctions for a new car for the other half..
maybe that would be the best way for you as you can wait to find the
right one whilst you have the jalopy

Mate to be honest I've been driving that Rover too much so anything
feels up market! I'm not too keen on the A3 if truth be told, though -
drove a few when I was getting my first MK4 and I just didn't take to
it - likewise with the new A3 - just couldn't gel with it.

Did think about a Ibiza diesel, too. Might have a drive of a few and
see how they sit. I would get a Furby vRS but they are still comanding
8k+ - unsure of insurance with those though.

I'll probably throw some Koni adjustables and Eibachs springs/ARB's on
a Bora so handling should be acceptable for the long term. My main aim
with this change of direction is to sink as little cash as possible
into a long term runner, that shouldn't *hopefully* loose too much
value over the course of ownership.

I know what your coming from I would love a decent VAG PD for the
wife but to be honest all VAG diesels are way overpriced on the used
market,,, apart from the ibiza but the ones I have seen feel like Seats
of old... not like a vag so I will be going for a Peugeout...

Just watched the Used car Road show and a tatty 1.9 diesel Golf with 128k got ?3000 at auction... madness.

Having just done the deliberations you are doing over a cheap mk4
diesel I have decide against it and I am looking at a 307 HDI with just
40000 miles on a 51 plate for a around ?4k

whereas the equaivalent golf /bora would be 7 to 8 even at auction!!!
the Mkiv is a better car... but is it really worth twice as much!

On the flipside I have considered selling the 4motion and buying a high
spec Bora PD for us and buying a cheap high mileage 1.8t and IHIing it
just for me.....

Mate tell me about it, when I saw ghow much your old one went for thats when the penny started to roll (took a few more months for it to drop lol)

Any thoughts on what I should ask for the Anniversary - I see people still asking 13k for theirs but they have whey more miles than mine.

Just as a guide I picked up a 2002 02 Bora Sport TDI 150 for ?6800 with 55K miles. Knocked the seller down ?900 as it was due a timing belt service and the fans were knackered. Fixed the fans myself and the service is booked for Saturday at Midland VW in Cannock for ?400. Car is in great condition and fantastic for my daily commute and monthly trips to Newcastle. Would be a good compromise for you from what I've read in thsi post.

Sounds like a very sensible move, I could never understand having the Anni and not using it! Money is better invested elsewhere.

Should have bought a Diesel Anni to begin with though mate [:p] lol

I did consider selling mine and getting a Lupo GTI when I was in the process of buying my house but just couldn't let her go.

Would be interested in your coilovers though if they fit a TDI? [;)]

Yeah, such a shame i was pushed for time to pick the new 'un up as i would have happily let the old girl go for the dealer PX price and would have loved to see it go to an enthusiast owner, she was last seen in Runcorn old town looking very dirty, with a tow bar fitted and being loaded up with Karaoke equipment..... [:'(][:'(][:'(]

As for the price for your Anniversary mate, it's definately gotta be pitched at the top end of the price range imo purely down to condition and the very low mileage for an Anni, for an enthusiast who is actively looking for a MK4 Anniversary yours would be very attractive due to the mileage and peeps would imo pay a bit more for the 'right' car...

Trawl the Trader and classifieds etc and try and get a feel for the pricing in general, maybe pitch yours ?1-1.5K above and see if anyone bites? you can always bring it down if it doesnt get any interest [:)]

Remember though, You can't race your house, but you can live in your car....[:p]

I am in exactly the same boat!

I am about to go on a company car scheme at work where I basically loan a car from VW, Audi, Skoda or Seat. Thing is, the scheme is very very cheap and I can't justify keeping the anni as a second car when I am about to buy a house! You get to change your car every 6 months, nevr have to bother with servicing, tyres (hopefully), tax etc etc. A brand new Golf GTi is ?110 a month!

So my anni will be up for sale in the next few months [:(] and put the dosh into bricks and mortar!

Not sure how to price my anni though with approx 70K miles on the clock. I hope to geat around 11,500, but it depends if I sell the plate and extras I've added to the car seperate.

Gonna do a bit of research first and start advertising at this summers shows as I want it to go to a good home!

Tom
