This seems to be a recuring subject on this forum and it has been driving me round the bend since I got my new Golf.

I have a Mk 5 GT TDI DSG with factory SatNav (inc highline display) and the telephone preperation with a Nokia 6320i mobile. All works well with sound through the stereo etc but I dont seem to be able to get 'Telephone' in the main menu allong with MFD, Audio, Navigation, Veh. status, Settign and Display off. It has been into the dealer and they seem pritty clueless about the whole thing and have logged a query with VW technical but I am yet to get a propper responce.

However, I was wonering if anyone on this forum has the same problem or has this function fully working as described on pages 14 and 35 of the manual. Likewise does anyone have access to a exploded view of the dash internals which shows how it would all connect. I assume that the telephone would connect to the computer as well as the head unit. Any advice/pictures or previous experiences would be most usefull in building my case to the dealer and VW.

If anyone else has this problem then can I suggest that we all pester our dealers to log complaints to VW as if it is seem to be a widespread problem then may be they might do something about it. If they cant get this to work properly then I will be looking for some money back as ?325 for a holder is totally ridiculas, however if I were able to control the telephone as it say in the manual this would then justify the extra cost.

Thanks in advance

DaveL, I have the same experience. The dealer cannot help, the customer service never calls back. I am almost giving this up. I have only got my car for over one month. If you are living in the south, I think Daimainmkv has the same experience, we can may be contact the trading standard office together and make it a case. Although I have just got the car for one month, I am 100% sure my next car won't be a VW! (Very poor customer service)

Thanks for you feedback, why it is printed in the manual if it does not work I do not know. I had a loan car (brand new) while mine was in for the first service and looked in the handbook in that and it was still printed in that. I have even tried changing the car language to German to see if that may be the problem. No luck so far.

I live in East Anglia and if things don't get sorted a chat with the trading standards people to see what can be done would be a good move. Rather than any money back I would rather have the thing working how it should. You are right about VW service being rubbish.

Please post any information you find out in the future and if any one has had their dash to bits with the telephone preperation installed I would be interested to know where all the cables go. Anyone got a workshop manual ?

I think (and I emphasise I think) all these manuals are subject to a disclaimer somewhere saying that the features described in it will vary from region to region and that they have the right to change specs and functionality whenever they feel like it without notifying anyone or changing any documentation.   Having said that there is another usefull MFC setting which is described in the manual but is not on my MFC and is the lower mirrors when reversing fucntion.  I didnt think this would be usefull until i was actually doing a paralell parking!

morning chaps - have been sunning myself for 2 weeks so excuse the late comings. According to my stealer ( and VW customer "services"), the UK handbook is a direct translation of the German one and therefore many ( i repeat MANY ) of the functions mentioned do not work in the UK. I did query this same thing with my stealer b4 i went on holiday - maybe he has replied to my work e-mail. Yes, I have this problem, and yes, it annoys my that ?325 has been spent for no reason - I could have spent far less elsewhere. Maybe trading standards is a good idea ....

I logged a querey with VW customer service last week and they came back to me on Friday and said it would not work on a UK coded car (Only in mainland europe) and as a result they would be contacting my dealer and offered me a full refund for the cost of the option. The chap I spoke to said there had been several queries regarding this and I was one of two he was investigating. Not heard off the dealer regarding the refund yet though, will call them today. I suggest that we all try and get our money back, although it would be nice to just get it working.

However, does anyone see any problems with recoding the car to think it is a German car and then changing the language to english and units to miles via the MFC and hey presto it should work? Even if the just the telephone menu is in German I am sure I could live with that as long as I can see who is calling and go through the telephone book I don't care. Anyone familiar with the coding of cars?

I don't think that you will have any problems when you tell them the problem, however my call reference number was 338 2220 and spoke to a guy called Trevor Charley. Tel 0800 711 811, then one of the options.

Called the dealer this morning and they are raising a check for ?225. However I want the ?110 for the cradel back aswell. Hopefully get the full ?335 back in the long run.

Good luck to you all in getting your money back. But it is such a shame this feature is not possible.

Another update. It turns out that I will only be getting ?225 and not ?335 as some of the functionality still works (radio mute, holder, charger etc) and they have calculated the refund on what does'nt work if you see what I mean. Anyway better than no money back and ?110 for what I have seems fair. I wonder if they will update the price list for those buying this in the future or will they come up with a new software update? All the best.

Dear all

I found this on the german site www.golfv.de (you need to register to be able to see posts, quite difficult not knowing any german) However this shows that telephone kit will work how it says in the manual. This chap seems to say that he had telephone preperation but upgraded it using the parts below to get it to work properly. His cradle has the 'I' and spanner buttons on the bottom and he seems to say that a interface box is requred, however after closer inspection of my car I have a inteterface hidden box under the drivers seat carpet bit with part number 1KO 035 729 E. Does anyone know the significance of the final letter ? Going to do some more reasearch and then might try some of the bits in my car, the cradle first.

Below is the post I have coppied from from the site with pictures.

DaveL

very rough and literal translation as follows:

I converted myself the mobile phone preparation to the mobile phone festival installation!! (Once again something, according to VW, is not possible!!)

One must be name in addition a Nokia 6310i characteristic, the interface box under the by driver's seat & trade the mobile phone reception.

Part numbers: 1K0 035,729 C or 1K0 035,729 D - interface boxes - 308 ?

1K0 035,705 B - mobile phone reception "Nokia 6310i" - 129 ?

The parts got I to be sure much more bargain in the Teileverwerter!

then it looks like this:

Let me know if you can find the parts, Dave - would be excellent !!

Hi

I made a similar translation and you can kind of get the jist of what he is trying to say, when on about the reception I think it means the cradle. and festival I think it means complete telephone system

I have also abtained extracts from the VW workshop manual which says that the only difference between a vechicle fitted with the full telephone system and telephone preperation is the factory fitted mobile telephone. Theirefore I can only deduce that if I have the telephone preperation which includes the interface box under the drivers seat (although a slighly different part number) then the only thing left that is different is the cradle, which is different in the fact that it has two buttons on the bottom. The cradle I already have does not have these buttons and is for several telephone including the 6310i. It appears the one mentioned is only for the 6320i.

I have called parts at the local VW garage and the parts are availible but are back ordered from Germany and are non refundable/returnable. I think the new cradle is about ?100 so may give that a go but I am very reluctant to shell out ?300 for a new interface box unless I know it will definately work. It may only work in the German Language aswell!? Who knows.

I will keep posting progress, but I may not buy the new cradle until after pay day, so it might be a couple of weeks.

Would love to know if anyone else has tried this out.

Remove the black cover under the seat, disconnect the wires (4 No. with ignition off) to the aerial s election control unit, remove the steel plate on the floor and it is then possibel to lift the carpet just enough to disconnect the existing interface box and install the new one. My existing one was a 1KO 035 729E and was grey where at the new one was green and made by Nokia. Put everthing back and then turn on ignition and goto the main menu to find that Phone is now in the main menu and operation should be as per the handbook in the car. No....the UK spec tele-pre does not show on the high-line computer. That was how I called the VW customer service and got a cheque of ?225 back.... I gave it up completely. It is good that DaveL can get it to work, but it is well over my budge to spend on a handfree....(now start to find my next car....)
