Hi All,
My Golf V 1.9 TDI 2004 had been idling a bid oddly for a few weeks, more vibration than usual and a short of metallic tinkling from the engine compartment. Then in a traffic jam for a few minutes and just moving off there was a sort of bang (not loud) and a sudden loss of power (like I had hit the brakes) and it started running roughly and underpowered. No warning lamps. I limped home. left it for a couple of weeks then due to nearly flat battery, had to roll car to my garage to get battery charged.
Just started it and the power steering jump is illuminated, not sure if that is just linked to the nearly flat battery and will clear or not. Checked oil level, all fine.
FYI I’ve had a reconditioned turbo fitted a few years ago and a new steering rack (due to failed inbuilt steering sensor).
Bought an £11 Bluetooth OBD sensor today from Amazon but can’t get connected to it as yet!

Any ideas guys?

I should have added that I’m pretty sure I saw some white smoke in the rear view mirror just after the power loss but I’m not seeing any just now….and I think the “tinkling“ idle i referred to was more like a knocking noise.

the best thing to do is to get someone near to you with VCDS or another VAG specific reader to read out the car... on the other hand it's a MK5 so it should at least let you read the engine fault codes with any BT OBD program straight from your mobile phone..If you got an andriod phone you can try to use torque, but make sure it connects to the program first before shelling out on paying for the pro version as it's not compatible with most elm327bt OBD2 devices... anther one you can try is Dashcommand... same thing there with the ELM327bt devices... a few other non vag specific ones that'll readout the engine fault codes are INCARDOC for the ELM327 device and OBD2 Harry Scan..That is assuming you've bought an ELM327BT device.

But if you ask me you are better off buying VCDS when owning any of the VAG stable cars.
