Hey everyone.

I had a bit of a shock on my way home last night when all of a sudden, I noticed my water temperature rising above normal. I had only been driving 3-4 mins max and very casually. Then quite quickly (about 2 mins) the needle hit the 130degC red line and I get a "STOP - Check coolant - service manual" warning message flashing up!!

I check the coolant level after I left the car to cool down and it was just at the min level. Topped it up and took the car for a drive again today, but still exactly the same problem.

I also don't have any heating anymore!! Is this a common fault and is this going to be a big problem that will cost me loads to fix? I've check the other threads but none mention the water temp going to red line nor the lack of any heating.

Thanks for any help before I take the car to the dealer to charge me an arm and a leg!

could also be water pump this happened to me, if you take the water bottle cap off and get someone to accelerate a bit you should see the water returning. if not like in my case it was the water pump.

Thanks to both Cyrix and smm20-v-t for your prompt replies. I'll try what you suggested tomorrow. Hope it's not going to be an expensive problem to fix.

Anyone else had this problem? Just trying to gather as much info to determine whether I have to take my car to the dealer to fix or if I can do it myself...[:S]

I think mines on it's way out which is annoying as I only had the belt and pump done 15k ago.

I'm getting increased water and oil temperatures (I've got an oil temp gauge) at high speed on the motroway andeven got the STOP! message the other day. If I slow down and it quickly settles back down to 90 degs. The oil remains hot for much longer though.

If your heating was working it would most likely be your thermostat stuck shut, but as your cabin heating is no longer operating it means it's almost certainly your waterpump.

The same thing happened to me a few months ago, when the waterpump was being replaced the old ones plastic impellors had completely disintigrated, it really was shattered. The replacement (mine was from GSF - ?28) had much sturdier metal impellors.

At the same time you are recommended to get the cambelt changed as it will need to be removed in order to access the waterpump. I supplied the parts myself and managed to get a local specialist to fit the cambelt/pump for a meagre ?90.

One more thing is, do not drive the car any more than is necessary, as if it continually overeats the radiator may end up being destroyed.

Thanks so much for the replies guys. Really helped clear up what the problem is. Talked to a few garages after the comments from here and they advised that it is the water pump also. Will try to book my car in for a cambelt and water pump change next week.

Getting quotes around ?280 for both cambelt and water pump (3hrs labour) though. Is that about right?

Thanks for the warning Cesc. Car will stay tucked in the garage till then.

280 is that including vat as that's pretty cheap awesome charge 290 plus vat for the same and stealers are generally going for about 350 for just the cam belt the water pump is on top!

gotyour self a good deal there! where abouts are you getting it done?
Just checked quote again. It was ?290 but that's including VAT. Local garage in MK called JDP Motors. I might try get T&H or others to try better it. Wayside VW in MK quoted ?300 inc VAT just to do the cambelt! [:|]

The price you've been quoted seems to be the norm. I got an absolute bargain ?90 all in for mine it would seem!

Are the prices you've been quoted for labour or labour and parts?

Hey mate. That's a great price you got. Did you get your parts from VW or somewhere like German and Swedish?

I managed to get the price down to ?270 after a quick chat to them again. That includes all VM parts, labour and VAT.

Yep, got my parts from GSF ?28 for the waterpump and ?15 for the cambelt. ?90 for labour and the jobs a good 'un.

If you supplied the parts yourself it would probably be a bit cheaper as they would only charge labour and VAT.

I'm going to look into getting the parts from 'German Swedish and French' (GSF) and get quotes for just labour + VAT as I was quoted ?70 (inc VAT) for the cambelt kit and ?46 (inc VAT) for the waterpump! Think GSF should half that cost!??

Here is their website : www.gsfcarparts.com/https://secure.gsfcarparts.com/shop

Finally got the water pump, cambelt, tensioners etc etc changed. Cost me ?239 inc VAT and all parts from a local garage. Not bad I guess. Car is back on the road now [:D]

Thanks to everyone who helped!! [Y]
