This morning, First frost of the autumn BRRRRRR…... After checking my 150PD Anni had not been attacked by Trick or Treaters last night. I fired it up, switched the climate from Economy to Auto to start working on the windscreen and switched the rear screen heater on. After scraping the ice off the windscreen I hopped in the car to be greeted by a message STOP - Check Coolant.

So I stopped the engine opened the bonnet, the car has coolant up to the Max line but I still unscrewed the cap to the expansion tank checked the coolant had not frozen. Though it should not have as it was replaced with a new water pump just over 1000 miles ago fortunately it was not! After replacing the expansion tank cap I got back in the car fired the engine up. No warning message so I drove the 30 miles into work.

The car drives fine, Any suggestions why it might have done this? Will a VAG COM show an error? Should I book it into a specialist? or should not worry about it if it does not happen again?

Cheers

Common fault I had my expansion tank replaced under waranty to fix it but you can try cleaning the probes this some times cures it

I get that coolant warning every now and then, not often mind, and there is plenty of coolant, i just ignore the warning and have my car serviced at the usual time each year.

Yes as has already been mentioned , and I have had a call on this already

I did say on the phone and it will be mentioned another few hundred times again....

It will be the sensor.

Just check that the level is ok , if it is then it will be the sensor

You will need the expansion tank , they are not THAT expensive and common to go down

Sorry

This happened with mine recently if you stay under 40 and the cars ok and then you get on the motorway and it starts overheating it will be your waterpump as its common for the impellar to come off just a thought

I had this problem last winter , most likely to be the probe in the expansion tank if levels and temp are normal.

A new expansion tank from VW was only ?8 so a lot cheaper than even a diagnostics check.

The cheapest option is to buy some coolant, top the tank up and see what happens, if the problems come back buy a new tank and use the rest of the coolant that you bought earlier (you need to buy the coolant any way) .

By the way I had the same problem and a top up cured it.

I have put a new tank on the car, ?10 from VW an absolute doddle to fit though it did take me a couple of minutes to figure out an easy way to drain it. Problem solved!!

Hi<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

I have started to get this problem to, at first it was very rare (only happened once a fortnight) now it happens every time I start my VW cold [:(]

The coolant level if anything is slightly over the max mark. I took off the sensor at the top and put it back on again, are there anymore sensors?

If so where are they and what would you recommend to clean them with?

PS, where is a good place to buy the coolant?

Thanks

My 4motion is doing this atm.

Its only since the cold weather and only does it first thing when car is cold.

Once its warmed up a bit, the gauge goes up to 90 and is fine.

Does this sound like a change of res in my case or is there some other sensors?

Ste.

I've been getting this lately, but only in the morning. Guessed it was something to do with the cold because my coolant levels seemed fine. But I will now go and think about a new expansion tank. I'll wait and see if it disappears when the weather gets better first. [;)]

I guess so, the parts supply guy didn't bother with a VIN, just walked off and returned with one, all I asked for was a coolant expansion tank. A very common problem it seems...
