This message keeps appearing on my OBC when the car is left in the cold for several hours. I continually check the coolant level and there is a sufficent amount in there. Any ideas?

You need to fit a new reservoir as the sensor goes faulty they are about ?10 from a dealer. It is a very common problem

It is really easy to fit 2 screws and 2 clips and some anti freeze unfortunatly I do not have the part number but your dealer will possibly have one in stock

I had this last month but it was the water pump which was dead... 130+ degree heat in the engine will do that to a car :)

Looks like yours is a lot less serious but might be worth checking that too if your coolant level is ok

Howdy all, glad I found this thread..

Have had the same error message myself for the past couple of days - albeit intermittently.. Had it down to a cold start (as it seems to be ok after a run) also was going to drop some water out of the resovoir as its over the 'max' mark.. BUT now someone has mentioned it the engine comartment seems to be boiling after a run out... I only bought the car on friday, so dont know what is normal (2000 1.8T GTI -Its hotter than any car Ive had before I think) Im getting pretty bothered about this now..!

Oh yeah, and to top it off somethings slowly leaking - from roughly the area of the resovoir...orange water or oil, im not too sure (would oil be totally black - yeah I know, amateur question..?)Id have it down as oil, but with the above all happening its making me think oof a leak in the coolant system.

Cheers in advance, sorry to hijack the thread!

meant to add, when I say the cars hot, its not over heating, just feels very hot when looking under the bonnet. presuming the engine temp control is working ok it sticks at 90..

Do you mean some spots on the ground in between the front wheels? dont suppose you have AC/Climate do you? i thought i had a leak too but it isnt. its the pipes thawing out after the AC had everything chilled. with all the crap under the car mixed with the condensation, it looks like black oil.

keep an eye on your level just in case but id get your car to VW for a once over or better still back to the place you bought it. remember you CAN get your money back since you bought it recently.

Its to the drivers side front of the car.. have let it drip on a white saucer & really seems to b oil. havent really used the ac either. Its going to a VW specialist (not dealer) tomorrow - know them through a freind of the family - not particularly cheap but honest enough.. shall see tomorrow.

Also - bought this private, know where the fella lives obviously so its gonna be a fight if its bad. got it for about ?5500, 2000(x reg) with 100,000 on the clock. full vwsh.. wadda ya reckon?

Not really fair is it tho mate? I mean, its always up to the buyer to find out if there is owt wrong with the car in my eyes. 100k is a hell of a lot in 4 years, so its to be expected that the car will have wear and tear i would have thought.

On the actual problem itself..... i had the STOP CHECK COOLANT message once last week, on a cold start early in the morning for about 30secs. Went off never to be seen again. Car never overheated, fans work and everything....... a search found it to be a common cold start thing.

The 1.8T does tend to throw off a lot of heat after a run out, nothing to worry about really mate.

cool, cheers chris. Yeah I know 100k is a lot.. Deliberated over the milage for ages, but ended up taking miles over years as was on a limited budget. At the end of the day, sh!t happens, not the 1st or last but doesnt stop me getting mad! Glad to hear the engine bay gets hot, like I say, engine wasnt over heating, just felt fecking hot! had an mr2 last & that wasnt on a par with this for heat. But if its normal, no worries. Bit pi$$ed off with myself more than anything for not spotting a few things. hey ho- live & learn. what goes around comes around and all that ;)

totally off topic but what MR2 did you have? I've had 3 previously :) Rev3s, one GLtd and 2 turbos and they get veeeeerry hot under the engine hood

Had a 1992 GLTD.. TBH cant really remember the temps under there - v possibly the same, just that new car paranoia! Nice cars though - Dont think mine had as much power as the golf, but sounded / drove much more fun!

I had a nightmare with the check coolant. The coolant was leaking on the left hand side of the car and no where else.

I was on the M25 when it happened to me. I managed to get to Bluewater where the RAC came out to have a look.

The RAC guy thought it was the expansion cap so he replaced it with a third party one that didn't fit so he took the rubber seal out and out that around the existing one.

Driving home same problem so I call the RAC out next morning. This time the problem was diagnosed as the pipe connector being oval and not round. So he put a new clip on.

Again the coolant light came on. I got the expansion tank changed along with a new cap.

However the coolant warning came on again but this time the level was OK when I opened the tank and depressurised it.

It seems to happen on long journeys and I still haven't solved it. The temp gauge stays at 90.

I'm making a long journey this weekend, I'm hoping for a miracle so I don't have to pull over on the hard shoulder to have a look!

I bought my car in August so I know the feeling of "I hope it's not a lemon"

well had it into get looked at today.. seems there is a dodgy seal somwhere behind where the cambelt is.. gonna get the belt / pum leak done in one swoop..

On a negative note, looks like the engine has either been replaced, or had major work done at somepoint. all the cable ties etc are not original vw, and theres a couple of marks to suggest recent work..

bit of a [email protected] really..!
