GTi ordered with single disc as I'm not too fussed about having the 6 discs as I have them at present and tend to listen to the latest CD over and over until I'm bored and do mainly short journeys. The dealer is obviously trying to get me to upgrade as he says the 6 disc in dash stereo is better quality and also has midrange adjustment, what are your thoughts ?

I have read a few comments on here that the stereo isn't too good either way and I am expecting to be a little disappointed after the Bose system in my car - can the system be upgraded to the 6 disc in dash at a later date ?

Cheers :)

Dunno - but if the standard stereo in the GTi is the same as the 1.6FSi, then upgrade - you will be disappointed after Bose. Rattling a penny in a tin can gives more bass....
Seconded.

If you are one of those people where sound doesn't matter and you listen to music at a medium volume, you'll of course be fine. If you want quality at louder volumes (the OEM speakers and doors rattle like hell), then you need to upgrade HU and speakers

I am quite dissapointed VW got it sooooo wrong. My friend has a new focus company car and the stereo is amazing!

The problem is putting the RCD500 in will not actually get you a great sounding headunit.  So you may waste your money on it, perhaps you should think about a decent aftermarket system or a MFD2.  Personally my days of big systems are well and truly past me, all I have done is add an iPod to my RCD300.

Like I have said before I am happy with the CD player in my Golf SE. If you have an S spec 1.6FSI then it only has speakers in the front not in the rear as well. This does make it sound weedy.

As long as you don't turn the bass past midway it sounds OK to me.

I think the standard setup lacks clarity and depth tbh. Saying that I'm
a bit of an audio nut, so the accoustics of a car will always sounds
pretty shocking.

Although I sat inside a Mk5 recently with an MFD2 + Alpine amp driving
a full Rainbow Audio Mk5 upgrade and it did sound very good..

I'm sure someone on here has upgraded to Rainbow Audio speakers?

This is good advice, cheers milkfloat, I too no longer bother with high volumes etc in fact I was more than happy with the standard set up on my 03 Golf so as long as the RCD300 is comparable this will do me fine, I could do with cutting some costs (6 disc is ?275) as I am trying to save as much cash as possible prior to taking delivery.

If at a later date I choose to opt for a six disc can this be retro-fitted ?

I would think it should just be a straight swap - there is an excellent guide on removing the dash here - following that would allow you to remove the 300 unit and fit the 500. The 500 unit does sometimes appear on Ebay as well.

I'm relatively happy with the stock unit - does the job so to speak.
All I'm going to do as to add an iPod to it at the end of the year.

Yes - you can add anything really - provided you have the time and cash ! LOL

But seriously, the CD changer is a doddle to add - whether in the armrest, under the seat or in the trunk.

Glad you got sorted - and soz for not being able to pick up your call - I got your SMS though!

Pop round when you get it if you can........but not the old address........we're moving soon......but not far!!

Cheers Foxy I will send you a text when the car arrives and bring it show you but in for a wait, the dealer estimates early october as an order was already in the system but has been modified to my requirements.

I'm going to stick with the standard system and add it to a list of future mods - here we go again..

The speakers are ok, its only with certain bass that they start rattling the door panels, lowering the bass control on the head unit did help a little, but not much.

Would to get after market 16.5cm for the front and rear really
