(I posted this in a follow-up in Toff's huge GB thread, but I thought it might get lost in there, so I've copied it here too.)

Right, I've just been and installed my kits. Here's a very quick howto:

Tools you will need: 1 T20 Torx screwdriver, 1 Pair of Hands, Long fingernails or a sharp knife.

1 - Unlock the car. Open the door you're working on.

2 - Locate the plastic shield/cover on the inside of the door and use your fingernails or a knife to lever it out. This is the part which was most fiddly for me, with non-existant fingernails.

3 - Look inside the hole. You should see a gold coloured screw with a Torx head. Unscrew this - slowly - if you unscrew it too far you will drop the screw into the door and that'll be a whole new world of pain awaiting you. Other people have said that it takes 7-8 turns of the screw to loosen the lock, I disagree - on my V6 it took considerably more turns - please take your time.

Unscrew the screw and after every couple of turns, pull the outside handle and give the lock a pull. After a few turns you should notice the lock will become looser and looser. When it is totally loose the locking barrel and cap should pull right out. Be aware that the barrel is quite long - don't scratch your paintwork pulling it out!

4 - I took this opportunity to clean all the crud that accumulated under the old cap off of the door panel.

5 - Look into the hole where the barrel came out of. You should see a circular hole with a small flat opening (ie. where the 'point' of the barrel would meet). I believe this is the hole your little circular metal disc goes.

Now, I didn't bother with this, but it's up to you - I guess you could get some super-glue and some bloo-tack, put a dab of superglue on one side of the disc, a blob of bloo-tack on the other and stick the bloo-tack end to the end of the screwdriver and pop the disc in place and hold it until the glue sets enough for you to pull off the bloo-tack.

However, you could drop the disc into the door (and that'd be a real ***** if you'd already been in the door to fish out the screw!) and you'll make it a big job to reverse your work, if you wanted to (eg. to sell the car). It's up to you. I left mine as they were.

6 - Hold open the door handle and push the new 'Toff-cap' into place. It should fit perfectly. Tighten up the gold screw and pop the plastic cap back on. Et voila!

7 - Repeat the steps for the other door(s), if necessary.

Entire process should take less than 15 minutes, unless you drop the screw or disc into the door!

On the verge of going the de-lock route, but one thing is worrying me, is there a way into the car if the plipper dies after I loose the key slots. [*-)]

At the moment I'm tempted to do just the passenger side but both would be better, just don't want to get locked out the car with no way of getting back in. []

Feel free to pm me if the answer isn't the type of thing to post on an open forum. [;)]

I beleice you'll also need a metal plate to go where the lock barrel used to be.

My bora has only the driverside door lock (standard apparently). if i remove that, is there any way to get into the car?

bearing in mind the car has deadlocks (you can't unlock it using the inside door handles) and there's a boot instead of a hatch.

If you delock the doors do you lose the feature where you can open/close all the windows with the key? Normally this is done by holding the key in the lock in the open direction to open them or in the closed direction to close them, obviously with no lock this method is not possible but is there another way?

You do I'm affraid.

The only way round this would be to install an auto window module link these;

I cant emphasise enough how important it is to get this done to your Mk4.

A neighbour of mine had his Mk4 TDI stolen a few months ago, no keys, nothing... My car was there too and I am sure they would have taken that also if it had not been delocked. No doubt it has saved me on a few occasions!

Hi golfv64mo,

Thanks for the guide. I followed your guide and it work perfectly apart from the one thing.

I tightened up the gold screw and tried to put the plastic cap on-and it broke[:(], but lucky me I had two of them so everyone please be carefull while you push the cap back on!!!. As I've said I was lucky because there was two in the set and I needed only one.

I found that putting the cap on "Toff-cap" before placing it in the door works great as well. You just have to pull and hold the door handle while you're doing it.

I made few pics in the progress-is it ok to post them here?

Regards,

Stan

this should defo be a sticky!!

also make sure you have a spare
key for your car before carrying out this mod as you MAY need to put
the lack back in to program your new key

the autowindow module
made by alientech isnt the only product which can wind/unwind the
window from the remote fob - there is a far more easier and pain free
solution available!!

My bora has deadlocks. means if you lock the car usign the remote then the doors will not open from the inside (so you can't smash a window and open the door).

Say i delock it and for some reason or another i can't unlock it with the remote. how would i get in?

and also, if you press the unlock button on the remote for a while when you're too far from the car for it to reach it, the key de programs itself, and the manual says you program it again by putting the manual key in the door lock and unlocking it while pressing one of the buttons. if there's no lock then there's no way to reprogram the key.

i don't think it's a great idea unless someone can point out a solution to both these scenarios. (golf is a different matter becuase you've got the rear hatch and from what i know it doesn't have deadlocks so worst comes to worst you just smash a window.

excellent guide, only not putting this in kinda defeats the object of it doesn't it?
