Hi All

New too UK-MKIS but always been a DUB lover.

Bought myself a W reg VW 2.0 Golf GTI and have loved every minute of it so far.

I bought it for ?5700 on part trade with my old 95 1.3L polo, i paid ?5000 cash for it with the trade and figured that all should be good and dandy on it buying from a dealer who i wont mention yet till i hear what he has to say about it.

It went for its 70k service today and i had bad news from the dealer. So all in all the service only cost ?90 without an oil change cause the sump is corroded and has tiger seal on it ( stupid )

Other parts needing fixing and is gonna cost me over ?1400 from VW including labour.

Parts total will be around ?553 and thats without labour.

Parts needed excluding labour

- Anti roll bar bushes and clamps ?11

- Centre exhaust and clamp ?70

- both wing mirror's glass, as the heating function isnt working ?70

- PAS pipe is heavily corroded + new washers ?135

- tailgate barrel has siezed ?78

- Sump with level sensor ?85

- Rear Exhaust box and clamp ( not standard iether so it bloody keeps on falling of the catches) ?104

Finding out from direct line if my legal protection can do anything.

I am so dissapionted, some car salesman are such sharks.

So i sent him an e-mail detailing everything thats wrong and that i expect a phone call after 5pm to discuss. so will see what he says, gutted.

Do you all think i stand a chance of getting any money out this place ?

What do i do ?

Any ways on a better note here she is

Can you confirm that you bought it from a VW dealer, sounds like you did, if the guy doesn't offer much when he phones you, i would get on the phone to VW headquarters and report the dealership for selling you something in that state.

i feel sorry for u mate, i was in exactly the same position when i bought my car from a VW dealer too!

ARB's and tailgate lock had both gone like yours, but i needed a new rear window because of faulty elements, rear cluster was damaged and leaking.

Anyway, i got the dealer to fix the lot for free! was a major struggle, but assuming u got it from a VW dealer, u should get them to fix it all for free too, as it wasnt in a fit state to be sold to u! ie, it shouldn't of passed their multipoint check! Phone VW customer services and write to the dealer manager!

Hope u get it all fixed, keep us posted!

ps, welcome to the forum [:D]

Hi there

Unfortunately i bought it from a smaller dealer, not a VW one.

I tried to get hold of him last night and he didn't answer, then tried hiding my caller id and he turned his phone off.

Hopefully i get hold of him, but i can always go to the garage, if he is registered with the motoring association can i report him ?

At the end of the day if he isnt prepared to help me out i will right stinking reviews all over the motoring world to make sure no one else falls for this shark.

I agree mate, i am going down there tonight.

I noticed on autotrader he has another 2.0 GTI for sale, with 20k less miles on it than mine and its an x reg and its cheaper than what i paid for mine.

I found this on the Trading standards Website, hopefully i can get my money back

http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/cgi-bin/calitem.cgi?file=ADV0050-0100.txt

Cheers for the support, i will keep you posted

Not being funny and i know it may sound Harsh BUT you have bought a 6 year old 70 000 mile car
its not going to be perfect even coming from a dealer or private.... the car is halfway through its usefull life and the parts that have pproblems are VERY common wear and tear items on theses cars and really you should have spotted them before you bought and negotiated otherwise.

The fact is if you wanted a perfect car with no problems and a cast iron guarentee you should have spent 5k more and gone to a franchised dealer and bought a newer car.

Look its not like the problems you have are associated with a crash or theft damage it is all wear and tear... its the way things work.

I bought my 4motion for nearly 10k and yet I walked away with knocking front suspension and dodgy front tyres and stone ships... BUT I checked the car out thorughly (underneath aswell) and negotiated a price to include these bits and got ?400 off.

My best constructive advice is ... get the qoute of VW in writing... get the parts from German Swedish and french for half that price ..... then ask the seeler for a full contributuion towards the fiitting of them in a private independant garage.

yeah for sure i do understand and fully understood that when the car was bought.

I have prepared a quote myself and have the one from the VW garage, the parts dont seem to be that much but its the labour thats gonna burn a hole in my wallet.

I am having the car checked today to see if it had been in any accidents too, i was assured it was never but might be good i dea to find out.

So the plan was to get round there this afternoon and negotiate.

Thanks all

so i've just spoken too the dealer, he claims i'm the first costomer to come back.

Secondly he says he gets all his cars checked by a mechanic before selling them and he claims he pend allot of money on the car before selling.

I have requested a copy of the mechanics report and a copy of what work he had done on the car.

Some Advice.

Why are you using a VW dealer for a car that is out of warrenty, You would be better off finding an VW/Audi specialist or a Good Mechanic to do the following jobs.

Sump + PAS hose + Tailgate Barrel + ARB Bushes.

Take the car to an type/Exhaust place and have them fit a non-genuine exhaust.

You should be able to do the mirror glass yourself, Check Ebay out or Eurocarparts.

I can tell you know it will be well under ?1000 for that lot.

To be honest if you were to do the Sump and oil change yourself it would reduce the cost a hell of a lot, its not a hard job at all, Literally a few allen bolts and a gasket.

Does sound like they were a bit dodgy but it does have 70k on it and it is the usual Mk4 problems.

Tnaks for the advice Cyrix, i am taking it to a private garage to have all probs looked at.

He is my mates cousin and serviced my Polo when i had it and never charged me for labour.

So just rang him now and will drop the car off next week, i have found the N/S AR bushes on

http://www.247spares.co.uk for ?35.25, so going to get it in the mean time.

What do you all think of this sump, found it in another thread http://www.fumotovalve.com. 1 or 2 have recommended it. hopefully going to get a Milltek ordered to replace whole exhaust, still need to source a PAS pipe.

Thanks mate

Appreciated

Reliable does not mean invincible!

Shame it wasn't checked out properly and fixed up before the sale, but it sounds like you know how to get the best deal. There is no sense in taking it to VW for all that work but yeah use their report as a bartering tool with the other dealership!

Ah, not just the sump, then?

- Anti roll bar bushes and clamps ?11

Easyish DIY if you have sockets and a jack.

- Centre exhaust and clamp ?70

Probably just needs rewelding or a jubilee clip to hold in place, common problem.

- both wing mirror's glass, as the heating function isnt working ?70

Easy DIY.

- PAS pipe is heavily corroded + new washers ?135

Often curable by scraping the rust off, sanding down, and painting. Did my own that way about 3 years ago. ?7 for a tin of hammerite.

- tailgate barrel has siezed ?78

DIY job, soak the barrel in WD40 for a few days, then dismantle. You'll probably need to hammer it out. Budget an afternoon to strip and rebuild, but check for signs of corrosion around the handle.

If that's seized, you may have (or had) a leaky rear washer. Does the boot light work OK?

- Sump with level sensor ?85

Helicoil. ?20ish

- Rear Exhaust box and clamp ( not standard iether so it bloody keeps on falling of the catches) ?104

Beat heck out of it and it'll probably fit. Fixing the centre support will help too.

It's not too bad, but most of this is common faults - surely his expert mechanic knows what to look for? ahem.

Jubilee clip - any parts factors or DIY shed type place. Apparently a 2-2.5" dia. version is about right. Buy a few - they're dead handy. Jubilee is actually the brand name of one type, but they're good ones.

PAS pipe. I think I undid a support clip at the starter motor end, maybe another one at the other. I didn't remove the pipe, just cleaned up and painted in situ.
