[:'(]Afternoon all,

Now, the golfs now 3 and a half years old and had a good polish yesterday just prior to the rain and countless bird droppings... to my utter dismay i have found RUST near the roof seam, encroaching on to the upper rear quarter, about half a two pence in size bubbling yes bubbling!

After lookin in the handbook, it states a 6 or 12 year anti corrosion warranty? i trundled down to the local VW dealer to be told its only 3 years and will cost ?176.25 and gave me the usual yarn of what is covered by the 6 year .

Any one had any corrosion poblems? Thought these machines never rust?!!

This is my youngest golf yet and is the fiirst one to show any signs of corrosion

Any comments welcome

the golf is galvenised (sp)and has a 12 year warranty! they will only honour it if its rusting from inside-out! not the other way!

They are pains though, alot of people on here are having rusting around their boot handle and the stealers are having none of it!

if i were u i would kick up a fuss and call customer services! 0800 711811

I wish you luck mate....... my old 1.6 was rusting on both front
corners of the roof, on a 5yr old car with 56000 miles, and they were
having none of it... in fact blamed my use of cleaning materials on it
rusting!

To me, that warranty and anti-corrosion thing stands for nothing unless the car literally falls apart with rust.

After listening to the "thank you for your call please hold" for 20 minutes   they then spoke to the dealer who assessed it   and came back with ........... its a paint defect !!  and therefore only covered for 3 years  grrrrr blah blah blah!!!   to cut a long  they have advised me to get it assesssed by an independent   which i will be doing by lunch today..    What is the point of covering a motor for 6/12 years when all they are going to come out with is "paint defect"  if i was aware that a golfs paint was only gonna last 3+ years i wouldnt have bothered buyin one!  Still have the original invoice for the car ?19k!!    Let battle commence

Just returned from the the local body shop - confirmed with no doubts that it is a warranty issue... corroding from underneath... whats more... there was a DuPont rep there from   er  Dupont!  just by chance, who tested the paintwork for any extra paint depths , with his micron testing gauge?  all was well and concurred that it is a warranty issue  and will if need be put this in writing.  Now comes the fun part... informing VW pfft...   here goes...

Rob, I had an issue of a tiny bubble on my boot handle when the car was three years old - just outside of warranty, after writing to VW and watchdog and countless toing and froing nothing was done by vy and was told this was edge rust - there was no rust just a bubble coiming from inside out but still the To55 ers would not have this.Good luck, hope yours gets sorted, its about time they shelld out for there crap work. by the way it is a 12 year anti corrosion warranty, which is pointless having as they have excuses for rust on any part of the car, let us know how you get on !!!

mm it aint over yet! Called Vw's 'customer service' to be told they need it in writing from the Body Shop (in actual fact DuPont said they will do it) AND THEN VW will send out there own paint expert (?) to re assess the already assessed corrosion........... what the !! its pure madness.. 3+ year old 37k car with a ?150 warranty issue (a 100% legit one) and they go to these extremes !

Yeah Vw s customer service generally SUCKS.. the local VW parts Dept are fantastic b ut the office workers need a pesonality transplant have had 3 strange situations:

1. Walked in wanting to spend around ?10k, after almost shouting for attention a young Salesman aked the usual questions dissappeared for 2 minutes returned with "nothing, thanks bye" no card, didnt take any details.. nothing.

2. Had a dodgy coil... took it in Xmas eve... after being rather rudely shown to the waiting area was told as a "one off favour we will replace the coil FOC" even though the car was out of warranty... only to find out that 1000's of them are being replaced on FOC anyway!

3. The worst one... took a golf on for body work... was in for 3 days then told another day.. then another day until i was promised would be ready for the sat... quick call to them before collection revealed they had pranged it into the garage doors!!!!! "but it still drives" was the response.

I must admit other car makers cust service has been fantasticin the past its just that i needed to call them more often then with the VW..... wha do ya do

Agreed. LC Charles, Crewe, in particular... bar the very friendly parts department have 99% of the time been ***. as far as service is concerned.

Got my car reparied under warranty as it had a paint defect. Got talking to the indenpendent paint inspector appointed by VW and he implied that I was lucky as I had got it under 3 years so could get it under the paint warranty. He then went on to say that the corrosion warranty had so many loopholes in it that they hardly ever had any valid claims. Really nice guy who is just working within the constraints of his job and I admire his honesty. He said VW were not uniqiue for this, apparently all makes are at it.

A bit worrying really as my mate has a high mileage (lots of road salt etc) 4 motion and it is starting to rust really badly, no history of accident damage. Look at any Mk3 and they seem to be really bad for rust and it looks as though the Mk4 will not be any better.

As most people buy new now and "dispose" of the car I can see why they haven't bothered to over engineer the body shell. It's niggles like rust etc that will encourage people into a new car but am I being a cynic?

I'm currently waiting for a phone call from my local 'vw bodyshop' (30 miles away!) to say wether the little rust patch just to the right of my boot handle is a warranty case.  The chap who assessed the rust said if it was his decision he would of said yes straight away, but he's got to go through various channels i expect to get a yay or nay! I will give an update when i hear from them!!

sorry .. have posted other threads re this matter UPDATE... Report stated it was a manufacture defect and was not the fault of any neglect etc.....was then told shouldnt be a problem just wait for confirmation.(VW)

OH YEAH the confirmation was "sorry out of the 3 year warranty" the ******** ! really am a tad annoyed so yes VW acknowledge its their fault but are doing zilch about it! Just gonna write a strongly worded letter, see what comes of it bloomin germans

So when the hell does this 12 year anti corrosion warranty apply?
